OTTAWA – Move over Netflix, Canadian Anglophones now regularly consume a number of over-the-top streaming services, says new research from the Media Technology Monitor (MTM).
Over the Top Services: Analysis of the Anglophone Market looks at the popularity of several OTT services among Anglophones, the demographics of different subscribers, and how they consume media as a whole.
Highlights from the report include:
– 65% of Anglophone households subscribe to an OTT service. In 2011, shortly following the launch of Netflix in Canada, only 12% of Anglophone households subscribed to OTT services;

Telus, Shaw, say no licence should be granted, and especially not to Bell or Rogers
GATINEAU – On Wednesday, phase II and III of the hearing into a mandatory carriage licence for a national, news oriented multilingual and multi-ethnic television service was the opportunity for the applicants and then outside intervenors to tell commissioners why they believe certain applications are not special enough to warrant a license under section 9(1)(h) of the Broadcasting Act.

OTTAWA – Michel Bissonnette will be working double-duty for a while.
CBC CEO Catherine Tait announced Wednesday the current executive vice-president of Radio-Canada would be taking over as interim EVP of CBC, following the departure of Heather Conway next week.
Conway’s permanent successor will be chosen in the new year and Bissonnette (pictured) will take on his new role starting December 8.

OAKVILLE – On Wednesday, November 28, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations will be issuing public test messages through Alert Ready, Canada's emergency alerting system, that will hit TVs, radios and wireless phones all around the country.
Each province and territory will issue one test message at 1:55 p.m. local time, with the exception of Quebec, where the test will occur at 2:55 p.m. local time. GATINEAU – Last week Corus Entertainment filed an application informing the CRTC that it will shut down 44 transmitters and requested an amendment to their station licences.
Twenty of those stations had not been converted to digital and Corus was required to do so, according to the conditions of the acquisition imposed by the CRTC when then CanWest Global stations were acquired by Shaw Communications back in 2010.
