OTTAWA – Public Safety Canada discussed resource and leadership challenges in setting up a dedicated broadband network for emergency responders in a January 2020 presentation obtained by Cartt.ca.

OTTAWA – Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada announced today mid-range wireless plans have been reduced by 25% three months before the federal government’s target date.
The government initially announced it was committing to tracking and lowering the cost of mid-range wireless plans from Virgin (Bell), Koodo (Telus) and Fido (Rogers) over the course of two years in March 2020. OTTAWA – The next steps in developing a public safety broadband network (PSBN) in Canada have been delayed for two years now and counting.
Such a network has the potential, according to Public Safety Canada’s website, “to improve the effectiveness and safety of first responders and the public safety community.”
A PSBN “is a secure high-speed wireless data communications network that can be used by emergency responders and public safety personnel to communicate with each other in emergency situations, planned events, and day-to-day operations,” a Public Safety Canada spokesperson said in an email to Cartt.ca.

TORONTO — Rogers Business and Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd. announced today the launch of a 5G wireless private network (WPN) at the mining company’s Detour Lake Mine (pictured above) in northeastern Ontario.
Detour Lake is the second-largest gold producing mine in Canada, according to a press release, and the mine “is the first of its kind in Canada to be fully connected over a 5G Wireless Private Network, providing enhanced coverage, end-to-end reliability, full redundancy, and a low latency network across its 80-square-kilometre operation.”

IGLOOLIK, Nunavut — Canada’s first and only all-Inuktut TV channel, Uvagut TV, is celebrating its first anniversary this week.
The channel was launched on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021 by Nunavut Independent Television (NITV) and started out broadcasting 168 hours a week of Inuit-produced culture, arts, movies and information programming.

MONTRÉAL – Cogeco Inc. reported its first quarter 2022 results today, which show its revenue increased by 15.3% to $745.3 million compared to the previous year while profits declined 1.1% to $119.1 million.
Cogeco also reported adjusted EBITDA increased 10.4% to $354.4 million.
