Independent broadcasters want their HD added to satellite services
MONTREAL — The licence renewal applications of Bell and Shaw’s satellite TV distribution services prompted 156 replies, the vast majority of which were comments from individuals upset Shaw Communications plans to discontinue a free basic TV service it set up for people who lost access to over-the-air stations during the digital transition.

TORONTO – The Canadian government should hold social media companies responsible for what they publish, just as traditional media are, according to a new Nanos Research survey.
The poll, commissioned by watchdog group Friends of Canadian Broadcasting (FCB), found that more than four in five respondents say they agree (63%) or somewhat agree (21%) that the government should hold online social media platforms like Facebook responsible when they publish inaccurate, misleading, or illegal content in the same way that traditional news media are held responsible by the government. CALGARY – The data of about 15,000 Freedom Mobile customers was exposed by a security breach from late March to late April, the Shaw-owned carrier confirmed Wednesday.
A CBC report says that Freedom Mobile was apparently warned of the breach by an outside research firm on April 17, 18 and 23, but did not respond to that firm until April 24.
Freedom said its investigation determined that the breach began on March 25 and affected data processed by a new external third-party vendor that had been hired to streamline its retail customer support. The problem was fixed by April 23, continued the carrier, adding that…

MONTREAL – When Catherine Tait became president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, the strategic review that her predecessor, Hubert Lacroix had put in place was in its last phase and therefore she jumped into the elaboration of a new strategic plan that should be launched towards the end of May having been approved by the board.

VANCOUVER – Kim's Convenience creator Thunderbird Entertainment has struck a distribution deal with Encore Inflight Limited for the first two seasons of the Canadian hit comedy.
The agreement will see the series available for in-flight viewing on airlines including Cathay Pacific, Emirates, SilkAir, Scoot, Royal Brunei Airways, Thai Airways, Qantas, and Qatar Airways.
Season three of Kim's Convenience, which premiered in Canada on CBC in January, will also be part of the deal once it is available. A fourth season will begin shooting this spring.
