TORONTO – CBC is bringing back its homegrown competition series Battles of the Blades this fall for a fifth season.
Produced by Insight Productions, the series combines athletes from two of Canada’s favourite sports — figure skating and hockey — as they pair up in a live, high-stakes figure skating competition. In this new iteration, teams will once again compete for the charity of their choice. More details will be announced later this spring.

OTTAWA – The CRTC has laid out its 2020-2021 Forecast for the next two years under the headings of Telecommunications, Broadcasting and Consumer and public protection.
Designed to supplement the CRTC Departmental Plan 2019-2020, the Commission said that the publications are designed to help foster a predictable regulatory environment by providing advance public notice of its activities over the next two fiscal years, each running from April 1 to March 31.

TORONTO – The CBC Gem streaming platform will be available on two new platforms starting Monday.
The public broadcaster said Thursday that Gem is extending its extending its service onto Amazon Fire TV and Android TV beginning April 15, and that other platforms are currently being evaluated. It is currently available on TV screens via Apple TV and Google Chromecast.
CBC Gem also unveiled an update to its home screen this week that displays shows and movies in “shelves”, a move that is designed to improve content discovery by displaying it in a more intuitive and familiar manner.

MONTREAL – Two weeks ago, Cartt.ca reported Québecor had complained to the CRTC alleging undue preference in Bell TV’s treatment of TVA Sports.
Tuesday, Bell filed its answer, saying it was not a valid complaint since, among other things, negotiations were under way to set affiliation agreements for the next few years.

TORONTO – Canadian television and digital media production company Media Headquarters has licensed its studio competition format Canada’s Smartest Person to Spanish production company Globomedia.
Globomedia is producing a 10-part series for broadcaster TVE that is slated to air later this year.
