TORONTO – Chris Wilson has been appointed as executive director, sports and Olympics at the CBC.

Wilson (pictured) has been leading the sports team as interim head since January when former ED Greg Stremlaw left.

During his time as the interim boss, “he has proven to be a thoughtful leader and a wonderful team builder,” said CBC EVP English Services, Barb Williams, in an announcement to staff on Tuesday.

“Chris' enthusiasm for this role has been infectious; he has fostered productive relationships with leaders right across our organization and his knowledge and experience from the business side of sports have led to finding new opportunities and partnerships that will engage our audiences across all platforms,” she added.

In addition to leading CBC Sports, Wilson will oversee the CBC’s exclusive Olympic rights and partnership with the International Olympic committee will also name Chef de Mission appointees to lead future Olympic Games.

As was announced in January, François Messier will continue on in the role of Chef de Mission for the Tokyo 2020 Games and the Beijing 2022 Games, Williams outlined in her announcement. “François and Chris have been working exceptionally well together and we know their successful collaboration will ensure audiences experience what they have come to expect from CBC/Radio-Canada – best in class coverage,” she added.
