OTTAWA – The CRTC has given Bell Media the green light to add a pair of new transmitters to its CTV Two station in Barrie, a move that was opposed by two of its own commissioners in addition to a host of competing broadcasters.
Bell Media asked to add two new digital transmitters to CKVR-DT Barrie to serve the areas of Burlington, Fonthill, Fort Erie, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Oakville and Welland, Ontario. TORONTO – The CBC is ranked 6th in a survey of the top ten most influential brands in Canada.
In the first ever Ipsos Influence Index Study conducted last November, Ipsos Reid asked over 1,000 Canadians to rate leading brands on a variety of attributes. The data revealed six dimensions which help determine the most influential brands in the lives of Canadians – leading edge, trustworthy, relevant, presence, corporate citizenship, and engagement.

TORONTO – After reaching a music licensing deal with the Audio-Video Licensing Agency (AVLA), CBC said Tuesday that it will launch a new Canadian digital music service this winter. The agreement will also allow the national broadcaster to offer more of its radio programs on-line and on demand.
AVLA represents almost 1000 major and independent record companies and other copyright owners, including many independent artists. The deal marks the first negotiated collective license in Canada for on-line streaming and podcasting of radio and on-line digital music programming.

TORONTO – CBC Radio One has taken a page from radio’s past and transformed it into some interesting new programming.
The station has begun airing a radio drama-satire called Trust Inc. on Thursdays at 11:30 am and 11:00 pm ET. The half hour series delves into the fast-paced media landscape and the relationships between journalists and public relations practitioners. With a focus on Leger and Pratt, a fictional Canadian media relations company whose clients consist of CEO’s, corporations, star athletes, political leaders and celebrities, the details just don’t emerge, they spin.

OTTAWA – More than 20 applicants have asked the CRTC to be awarded a spot on the FM dial in the crowded Toronto radio market.
And that list includes broadcasting heavyweights such as Newcap, CBC and Astral.
The Commission issued the call last September after Evanov Radio Group subsidiary Dufferin Communications applied to change the frequency of its station CIRR-FM Toronto, (also known as Proud 103.9), from 103.9 MHz to 88.1 MHz. Applications were due December 19.

MONTREAL – Louis Lalande has been named as the new executive vice-president of French Services for CBC/Radio-Canada, a position that he has held on an interim basis since last September.
Lalande (pictured) has worked at CBC/Radio-Canada for nearly three decades, holding positions such executive producer of special coverage and major events, executive director of technical production, and executive director of news and current affairs for Télévision de Radio-Canada. In 2006, he was appointed executive director of regional services, where he oversaw all French-language TV, radio and web programming in the regions.
SASKATOON – CBC will introduce a new radio morning show and expanded on-line services for the Saskatoon area within the next 12-18 months.
The move comes as part of the national broadcaster’s five-year strategic plan ‘Everyone, Every way’ which pledges to deliver new or expanded local service to various underserved Canadian communities.

TORONTO – Veteran sports broadcaster Brian Williams has been named to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
The Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement and service to the nation. A decorated broadcaster for more than 30 years, Williams began calling university basketball play-by-play in 1967 before starting his professional career in radio with Toronto’s CHUM AM (now TSN Radio 1050).
