Proposes new agency to battle billion-dollar problem
OTTAWA – FairPlay Canada, a new coalition of Canadian artists, content creators, unions, guilds, producers, performers, broadcasters, distributors, and exhibitors is has filed an application with the CRTC urging the Regulator to have Canadian ISPs shut down access to websites which enable content piracy.

TORONTO – One in four Canadians tuned-in to Saturday’s 12 ½ hour marathon broadcast of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada on Sportsnet, City and CBC.
The broadcast, live from Corner Brook, NL, included a two-hour pre-game show followed by four games which included all seven Canadian NHL teams across three channels. OTTAWA – It looks as though Hubert Lacroix will remain CEO of CBC for a while longer as the federal government has re-opened the job posting.
Lacroix’s official term came to an end on December 31st, but the government announced on December 19th (when five new members of the CBC board of directors were officially appointed), that Lacroix would stay on past the end of the year until a replacement was announced.

TORONTO – CBC/Radio-Canada has named Telelatino Network Inc. (TLN) as an official licensed broadcaster for coverage of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 and the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, allowing Canadians to enjoy coverage of the Olympic Games in more languages.

OTT leader climbs into top five favourite TV brands
TORONTO – New research shows that American streamer Netflix has climbed into the top five favourite TV brands among English-speaking Canadians – and is number one among millennials.
A survey done in the fall by Toronto’s Solutions Research Group asked 1,000 English Canadians for the TV channels they watch most often. GATINEAU – Thanks to two CBC.ca news stories in late 2017 which allege some unsavoury, high pressure sales tactics are being deployed by Bell Canada, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre is calling on the CRTC to launch a formal inquiry.

OTTAWA – Hubert Lacroix, the outgoing president and CEO of CBC-Radio-Canada, will remain in the role he took on 10 years ago as the search continues for his successor.
He was due to step down from the role on December 31, but the public broadcaster reported that an agreement was reached allowing him to stay in his position "until a replacement is found."
