CRTC asks for more information from Pelmorex following Rogers’ nationwide outage

By Denis Carmel OTTAWA – On Aug. 4, the CRTC sent a letter to Pelmorex regarding the impact of Rogers’ Canada-wide service outage on its role as the operator of the National Alert Aggregation and Dissemination (NAAD) system. “As an initial step, comprehensive information is required in order for the Commission and Canadians to understand what happened, and, just as importantly, what can be done to improve the system including how to mitigate impacts on the National Public Alerting System,” the letter reads. Alicia Barin appointed CRTC interim vice-chair, broadcasting

GATINEAU – The CRTC today announced on Twitter that its Quebec Commissioner Alicia Barin (above) was appointed by the Governor in Council as interim vice-chair, broadcasting on Monday for a six-month period. Barin takes over the role from Caroline J. Simard, who is set to begin her new role as Commissioner of Elections Canada starting Aug. 15. Simard was previously scheduled to leave the Commission in September. Proposed changes to policy direction show TSPs disagree on how best to foster competition

OTTAWA – When the federal government announced it was proposing a new telecommunications policy direction to the CRTC back in May, it emphasized how it would improve competition. This is supposed to help ensure telecommunications services are affordable and encourage innovation in the industry. Cinesite acquires majority stake in Quebec-based studio Squeeze

GLOBAL ANIMATION COMPANY Cinesite, which has studios in London, Montreal and Vancouver, announced last week it has acquired a majority stake in animation studio Squeeze, located in Quebec City and Montreal. The investment in Squeeze will allow Cinesite “to further increase its animation content and service offerings for international markets while bringing mocap (motion capture) and Unreal capabilities into the group to service video game and film productions,” explains a press release.
