TORONTO – Al Pervin has been hired as general manager of The Jewel 98.5 FM, the new Evanov Radio Group station which is expected to sign on-air in January of 2006.
For the past 13 years, Pervin has provided management consulting and sales training services to radio companies across North America. He’s worked in radio in one capacity or another for 40 years and recently ran a software business that provides web sites and other Internet marketing services to the radio industry.

TORONTO – Next week, new Humber College radio station CKHC 96.9 FM will launch as likely the only all-Canadian station in the country.
The station plans to play nothing but music by Canadian artists.
The Humber campus radio station has been operating at the north campus since 1973. CKHC 90.7 FM currently operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In 2003 the school applied to the CRTC for a ‘developmental campus license’ to operate a new radio station on the FM frequency of 96.9. The college was officially awarded a license as of Sept. 13, 2004.

TORONTO – Digital TV customers will be able to call on four different seasonal music channels from Max Trax and Galaxie while they roast chestnuts and stuff stockings.

OTTAWA – In a press release on Tuesday, the Coalition Against Satellite Signal Theft (CASST) said it was pleased with the Quebec Superior Court’s recent sentencing decision of Reggie Scullion who was charged under the Criminal Code of Canada of two counts of illegal activities related to theft of satellite TV service from DirecTV.
Scullion, who pled guilty in Quebec Superior Court, must forfeit more than $4 million in cash and other property that had been seized by the government in connection with the case, with $1.1 million of the funds to be distributed to DirecTV and the remainder…

OTTAWA – After hearing from CBC executives on October 27th, the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage has told Parliament it should appoint a task force to examine the nation’s public broadcaster.
The five-paragraph report from committee chair, MP Marlene Catterall says, “the government should undertake to establish an independent task force to review the mandate role and services of the CBC-SRC; to establish the role the public broadcaster must have and the services it must provide in light of the new media environment and technological advances.

OTTAWA – Telesat Canada last week reported third quarter operating revenues of $112.2 million, a 23.2% increase from $91.1 million in the same period of 2004. The company posted net earnings applicable to common shares of $25.3 million, 7.7% higher than the $23.5 million in the third quarter of 2004.
For the first nine months of 2005, operating revenues totaled $357.2 million and net earnings applicable to common shares were $71.1 million (2004: $62.1 million).
