Almost 9 in 10 newcomers subscribe to an SVOD service
OTTAWA – Watching video and television content is a regular habit among newcomers to Canada, with 99 per cent saying they have watched online video in the past month and 90 per cent having watched some form of TV content, according to a recent report from CBC’s Media Technology Monitor.
This puts newcomers’ online viewing ahead of the Canadian-born population (93 per cent) and on-par in terms of TV content viewing (89 per cent), says the report, released last week.

TORONTO – CBC/Radio Canada president and CEO Catherine Tait called Thursday for global public broadcasters to obtain certification for trustworthiness to combat disinformation.
Tait was speaking at the Public Broadcasters International conference in Prague, Czech Republic, when she called for the global broadcasters to assist in the fight against disinformation and bolster trust in public media.
She called for public broadcasters to get the Journalism Trust Initiation (JTI) certification, which is issued by Reporters Without Borders. JTI would scrutinize the broadcaster’s transparency and editorial practices in exchange for a label “showcasing and promoting trustworthy journalism,” according to the RWB website.

National public broadcasters CBC/Radio-Canada and Radio New Zealand (RNZ) announced Tuesday a new partnership agreement focused on the key areas of Indigenous cultures and languages, podcasts and journalist training.
According to a press release, the threefold agreement will see the two public broadcasters do the following: share knowledge, experiences and best practices to better reflect the respective diversity of Indigenous cultures and languages; share podcast content and explore collaboration on cross-promotion and possible co-productions; and share knowledge, best practices and learnings about journalist training and explore potential content exchanges and collaboration.

TORONTO – CBC last week announced its fall 2023 podcast and audio slate, which includes several new podcast series, an exclusive interview with Mick Jagger on Q With Tom Power, and the return of true crime investigative series Someone Knows Something.
Premiering Oct. 16, the new weekly podcast Crime Story hosted by investigative journalist Kathleen Goldhar “goes deep into a true crime investigation with the storyteller who knows it best,” reads a CBC press release. TORONTO – Production company Vérité Films, in association with Jeremy Fisher Music and Hidden Pony Records, announced Tuesday CBC original animated kids’ series Jeremy and Jazzy is premiering new episodes today on CBC Gem in English and on Radio-Canada’s ICI TOU.TV platform in French.
The new episodes consist of 26 two-minute episodes and one 11-minute special. Starting Monday, Sept. 11, the episodes will air daily Monday through Saturday as part of CBC TV’s CBC Kids morning schedule and will begin airing on Radio-Canada on Sept. 18.

OTTAWA – The CRTC announced Thursday its game plan to implement legislation that would force large technology platforms to compensate news publishers if they want to continue to link to their content.
The regulator will essentially embark on creating the regulatory backstop needed to catch any mandatory commercial negotiations between platforms and news publishers that fall through.
As such, in the same way it announced how it would tackle the Online Streaming Act, the CRTC said it will first launch a public consultation this fall to gather comments.
