OTTAWA – Thomas Mulcair, Leader of the Official Opposition and Canada’s New Democrats, will kick off Friends of Canadian Broadcasting’s Leaders’ Series about the CBC on Monday.
The Mulcair interviews, which will be conducted in French followed by English, will take place back-to-back starting at 7:30 PM EST on February 2 in Ottawa. TORONTO – Bell Media has promoted Tom Hastings to director, independent production, the company announced Wednesday.
Hastings, pictured, was formerly a production executive in the company’s independent production, drama unit where he was responsible for the development and production of dramatic series that have aired across Bell Media’s channels including CTV, Bravo, Much, Space, and The Movie Network.

TORONTO – While there’s no question over-the-top video services such as Netflix have become a “phenomenon” in Canada, the same can’t be said about subscription music streaming services, which have not been taken up to the same degree by consumers.

TORONTO – The Canadian Media Guild is objecting to a decision made last week by CBC/Radio-Canada management that bans its on-air talent from making paid appearances.
The union, which represents 6,000 workers in the Canadian media including many at CBC/SRC, called the public broadcaster’s new policy a “blanket prohibition” that is “a clear violation of our collective agreement, an infringement on our members’ rights and a dangerous precedent”.

TORONTO – The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) is throwing its support behind the NDP government’s pre-election promise to scrap the $115 million cut to CBC/Radio-Canada made in the 2012 federal budget.
Describing the CBC as “an essential public service” in a statement this week, NDP leader Tom Mulcair also pledged to guarantee stable, predictable, multi-year financing for the public broadcaster and to set up an independent process for appointing members of the CBC’s board of directors.
