Network expansion: SaskTel and Telus

Launches this week: Sasktel brings high speed Internet to four more communities REGINA – SaskTel has rolled out high speed Internet to Bruno, Annaheim, Elbow and Middle Lake. Residents of these communities are now eligible to subscribe to SaskTel’s High Speed Basic Level 2 package that gives speeds of up to 5 Mbps download. This expansion is part of the long-term strategy to increase access to High Speed Internet in rural Saskatchewan.  That strategy includes upgrading speeds to 10 Mbps download in over 220 existing DSL communities, in addition to expanding DSL of up to 5 Mbps to 50 additional communities. Telus’ complaint on auction eligibility rules dismissed by court

OTTAWA – The Federal Court has shot down a request by Telus challenging the Industry Minister’s authority to set the eligibility requirements for parties participating in next week’s 700 MHz spectrum auction.  The telco was also ordered to pay for the costs of pursuing its legal action. Telus filed an application with the Federal Court last August asking for an order to prohibit Industry Minister James Moore from setting any other eligibility criteria than what is set out in the Radiocommunications Act when issuing licenses for spectrum access.  This criteria prevents “large wireless service providers” from bidding for more… Continue Reading

CityWest hands off cellular business to Telus

PRINCE RUPERT, BC – CityWest is getting out of the cellular business “to focus investments on other product lines” and is referring its wireless customers in Prince Rupert to Telus. The small telco said its customers can switch their account without cancellation fees, and may trade-in their current device for credit towards any new Telus smartphone.  Telus and CityWest will soon offer other features to customers making the switch, such as allowing them to keep their wireless phone number and bundled packages of CityWest wired and Telus wireless services. New portal helps Telus customers’ track data use while travelling

TORONTO – Telus has rolled out a new mobile portal called Travel Tracker to help customers manage their data usage and costs in real-time while travelling. Competition Bureau vets Public’s sale to Telus

OTTAWA – The Competition Bureau has officially sanctioned Telus’ proposed acquisition of Public Mobile. The Bureau said Friday in a statement that it has issued a No Action Letter (NAL) with respect to the acquisition after determining that “the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in the sale of mobile wireless telecommunications services in Southern Ontario and Greater Montreal." Telus pledges Wireless Code compliance ahead of deadline

TORONTO – Telus said Monday that it is on track to implement all necessary requirements of the CRTC’s new Wireless Code of Conduct by the end of the month. The code, which comes into effect on December 2nd, establishes a common set of rights for all wireless consumers in Canada. Telus wins wholesale HAS rate change

OTTAWA – The CRTC denied a request from Telus to amend the rates, terms, and conditions applicable to all wholesale high-speed access services, however, it did agree to change Telus’ rates. The Commission said Tuesday that while it would not  review and vary Telecom Decision 2013-73, it would, upon further review, adjust the rate associated with Telus’ 6 megabit-per-second wholesale high-speed access service “on its own motion”.
