ON THE SURFACE, the 2008 Canadian Association of Broadcasters convention went off with nary a hitch.
Speeches and panels were mostly interesting, attendance was stable compared to last year and the country’s broadcasters did their usual good job in celebrating their best and brightest while we were all entertained by various musical acts over about a 42-hour span at the Westin Hotel.

TORONTO – Rogers Communications founder Ted Rogers is now being treated at the Toronto General Hospital and his condition has been stabilized, the company announced in a statement this morning.
"I am grateful for the quality of care I am receiving at the Toronto General Hospital, a world-class facility", said Rogers in the release.
“Mr. Rogers is appreciative of the interest in his health and has asked for the privacy of the family to be respected,” it concluded.

GATINEAU – Shaw Cable must change the way it treats and markets Canada’s gay and lesbian category one digital specialty service Outtv, the CRTC ruled today.
The specialty service and Shaw have had a long and rocky history, dating to its launch in 2001 as Pridevision, back when it was owned by Score Media. Ownership of the channel has changed a couple of times since and the most recent owners, extremely frustrated at how the big western cableco has treated the channel, went to the Commission earlier this year for help.

OTTAWA – Monday evening’s Gold Ribbon Awards Gala, held as part of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ 2008 Convention, celebrated outstanding achievement by Canada’s private broadcasters.
The Gold Ribbon Awards pay tribute to achievements in broadcasting in various categories including community service, breaking news, humour, entertainment programming, and promotion of Canadian talent. A total of 403 submissions were received this year.

TORONTO – Rogers Communications CEO Ted Rogers was admitted to hospital Friday afternoon and company executives have remained tight-lipped on the prognosis for company’s visionary founder.
He is being treated for “an existing cardiac condition,” said the press release late Friday afternoon. Rogers has temporarily relinquished his responsibilities as the company’s CEO to board chairman and former company CFO Alan Horn.
“The length of Mr. Rogers’ leave will be determined by his overall health and medical progress,” said the short release. It didn’t identify the hospital in which he is staying.
