MONTREAL – Quebecor’s broadcaster/TV producer/publisher TVA Group posted $14 million in net income attributable to shareholders in the third quarter, up from a $15.3 million net loss in the same period in 2017.
Revenues, however, dropped to $127.4 million for the period, down from $140.8 million year-over-year.
"Our financial performance in the third quarter of 2018 was impacted by lower operating revenues in our three business segments”, said president and CEO France Lauzière, in the news release. “Advertising revenues decreased in both our Broadcasting & Production segment and our Magazines segment. TVA Network's financial performance declined with a 10% decrease in advertising…

OTTAWA – While the main governmental expert panel reviewing the Telecom, Broadcasting and Radiocommunication Acts is only now getting under way, some of the most interesting conversations on the matter are happening now in front of the Senate (who knew?!).
While CRTC chairman Ian Scott appeared today (October 30) in front of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications, to talk about the Regulator’s needs, last week Canadian Communications Systems Alliance CEO Jay Thomson told the senators about his members’ (115 independent carriers who serve more than 1,200 communities – lots rural – with broadband,…

GATINEAU – Back in August, when the CRTC and researcher Ipsos launched a survey on what Canadians think of the sales practices of Canadian telecom companies, much private (and some public) hue and cry arose from the carriers across the country.
The tight timeline for Ipsos to finish the survey and the weak overall structure and wording of the questions could only lead to negative answers, they said. They were right. The results came back substantially negative, but does that mean they have a point? Does the survey’s supposedly skewed queries mean the results should be tossed out?
Consumers and consumer…

GATINEAU – If we may paraphrase some of the reaction by TekSavvy, Tbaytel and Eastlink representatives Wednesday morning in front of the CRTC it would be: "It seems strange to mandate us to continue being nice to our customers."
These three smaller independents (respectively, a wholesaler, a municipally owned telco and a regional wired and wireless carrier) also all had the same story to tell when it came to the dubious sales practices which have been so far outlined by consumers during the CRTC’s Telecom Sales Practices hearing this week in Gatineau:…

Instead, they will implement net billing in an effort to improve TV trading, says an announcement by marketing and research association thinktv.
thinktv president and CEO Catherine MacLeod said that its member companies, which include Bell Media, CBC/Radio-Canada, IndieNet, Corus Entertainment, Quebecor Media Group, and Rogers Media, were fully aligned on the initiative, adding that “thinktv works to help advertisers and agencies get the best out of television on all its platforms – and…

CALGARY – Freedom Mobile is expanding its Extended Range LTE rollout to select areas of Edmonton and B.C.’s Lower Mainland, including Vancouver, after first launching in Calgary earlier this month.
The Shaw-owned carrier says that customers with compatible devices in those regions will have better LTE coverage, including stronger indoor reception, now that it is deploying the 700 MHz spectrum that it bought from Quebecor Media last year.
A Freedom Mobile spokesperson confirmed to Cartt.ca that Extended Range LTE will soon arrive in southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area.

ON MONDAY, WE described a Federal Court of Appeal decision as one that strikes down the CRTC’s TV Wholesale Code.
Bell Canada had appealed the Code to the Court, saying the way it was implemented fell outside the CRTC’s jurisdiction – and in its decision released Monday the Court agreed with Bell, saying the Commission had no authority under section 9(1)(h) of the Broadcasting Act to meddle in private carriage contracts the way the Wholesale Code mandates.
The decision seemed to us to be the end of that Code – and we were bolstered in that…
