Sisam named Corus Toronto GM

TORONTO – Chris Sisam has been named general manager for Corus Radio Toronto, replacing JJ Johnson, who was named GM of Corus’ Vancouver radio cluster in December. Johnson replaces Lou Del Gobbo, who, as reported by cartt.ca, is retiring this month. Most recently vice-president of sales, Sisam has overseen Corus Radio’s sales activities since 2004. Sisam spearheaded the Corus Radio sales guarantee/sales professional code of ethics initiative, which was lauded by the Association of Canadian Advertisers. “Chris was the obvious choice to oversee our Toronto cluster,” said John Hayes, president, Corus Radio. “His strong management skills and… Continue Reading

COMMENTARY: CanWest pulling out all the stops in its effort to rebound

CANWEST’S INVESTORS’ DAY WAS supposed to be today, but the rumor is someone important recently had surgery and couldn’t make the Toronto meeting, which will now happen next week. It’s too bad, because CanWest Global’s executives might want to get this bit of business over sooner rather than later. It will probably be an uncomfortable meeting. It’s no secret that the Winnipeg-based media company launched by the late industry legend Israel Asper has fallen on difficult times of late. Its Australian radio and TV assets – after years of growth – are facing uncertain times with increased competition Down… Continue Reading

Total 2005 charitable contributions: $238 million

TORONTO – Counting donated air time, private Canadian radio stations contributed more than $238 million in the 2005 broadcast year to charitable initiatives. Efforts ranged from a single station’s campaign in North Bay, Ont., to help raise money for a boy’s life-saving heart transplant, to international disasters such as Southeast Asian tsunami relief, says the press release from Canadian Broadcast Sales (CBS), a national sales firm owned by Rogers Communications and Corus Entertainment, representing approximately 60% of all national Canadian radio revenue. In response to a request from CBS, 103 of its client stations responded with details of charitable… Continue Reading

COMMENTARY: Quebec shock-jock now an MP and other election musings

AFTER A DOZEN OR SO years of lobbying the Liberal Party power establishment, the Canadian cable, radio, television and telecom industries will have to start over beginning today. No matter how long this new Conservative minority government lasts (we sorely hope it’s longer than Joe Clark’s eight months in 1979), those at the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association, as well as Canada’s large telcos, have brand new friends to make – and influence. Issues like foreign ownership of telecom and cable companies, or even broadcasters, might get a more friendly hearing under the Conservatives… Continue Reading

The TUESDAY INTERVIEW: APTN president and CEO Jean LaRose

CABLE OPERATORS STILL (privately, mostly) grouse about the 10-cent fee increase the CRTC granted the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network last summer.  As reported by www.cartt.ca, the Commission granted APTN its license renewal on August 31st, and along with that, boosted the fee pass-through from 15 cents to 25 cents per sub per month. That’s a lot of extra money (over $12 million more). While the distributors soft-pedaled their opposition somewhat and didn’t raise much of a stink when the decision was made public because it’s a bit of a political hot potato, their message was clear: They didn’t think… Continue Reading

COMMENTARY: Nothing beats radio’s charity. Industry raises a stunning $25 million over the holidays

THOSE WORKING IN RADIO, or those covering it as journalists, are always preoccupied with what’s next technologically or what’s threatening radio’s future and how this old medium must change in order to persevere through the next century. In our digitally-driven, iPod and sat rad world, we can get jaded when talking about plain ol’ radio. We take it for granted and it’s not often we stop and reflect on what radio is absolutely nailing and offering recognition for a job very, very well done. So, here goes. Before Christmas, cartt.ca contacted all the major commercial radio groups in Canada… Continue Reading

The TUESDAY INTERVIEW: Lise Lareau, president, Canadian Media Guild

IT’S BEEN OVER THREE months now since 5,000-plus locked out CBC employees went back to work. For those who were locked out, is everything now back to normal? Not really, says union president Lise Lareau. Sure, the job’s the same and the money’s a little better for Canadian Media Guild members, but morale has cratered as the resentment festers while working under the managers and other company leaders who locked them out. The Corp.’s leadership has lost their authority to lead, says Lareau (right). What follows is an edited transcript of her chat last week with… Continue Reading
