EDMONTON – Craig Roskin has been hired as station manager, CHUM Television Edmonton.
Roskin comes to CHUM with over 19 years of television experience, most recently as general manager for Global Television in Edmonton. Prior to Global, he held a variety of roles with Western International Communications (WIC) leading up to general manager, Edmonton and vice-president sales, Alberta.

TORONTO – Rogers Communications today filed a lawsuit with the Federal Court of Canada over Bell Mobility’s recent run of TV and print advertising Rogers says “crosses the line” and is damaging to its brand.

OTTAWA – The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union, which represents many workers at Bell Canada, said Wednesday it will oppose plans by the company to create an income trust which would provide telephone service in rural Ontario and Quebec.
A CEP press release said it is concerned that the move will jeopardize universal, affordable phone service in a huge segment of the country, although it did not way why it had arrived at this position or how.

TORONTO – After months of looking, CBC Television today announced that Kirstine Layfield, a senior executive at Alliance Atlantis, will become executive director, network programming.
She replaces Slawko Klymkiw, who joined the Canadian Film Centre in the fall of 2005. Her official start date in what is considered the plum job in Canadian TV has not yet been announced. TORONTO – Howard Stern will return to the Canadian airwaves on Monday, via satellite, of course.
Sirius Canada today announced what most figured was inevitable, that the "King of All Media," Howard Stern, will be included as part of the company’s 100 channel premium line up. As of February 6, 2006, Sirius Canada subscribers will be able to hear Stern on the widely publicized Howard 100 channel.
Stern was, for a couple of years in the 1990s, available in Canada on Toronto’s Q107 and CFOM in Montreal.

It has now been a year since Videotron launched its cable telephone service, offering consumers an affordable alternative to the residential phone service provided by the major telephone companies such as Bell and Telus. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has allowed competition in local telephone markets since 1997 but this is the first real breach in the big phone companies’ age-old monopoly.
Jumping into a market in which giants such as AT&T and Sprint have foundered meant a massive investment in infrastructure and technology for Videotron, and of course a big risk.
