OTTAWA – Wind Mobile used a wireless event in Ottawa on Tuesday to reinforce the view that it needs access to more spectrum and a better regime for tower and cell site sharing.

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – The CRTC’s new policy on vertical integration, released late Wednesday, tries hard to balance the wants of Canadian television viewers with the commercial demands of the country’s largest vertically integrated broadcasters and television distributors, and the needs of the smaller and independent ones.
Following a five day long hearing in June, the new policy offers flexibility to the likes of Bell Media, Rogers Communications, Shaw Communications and Quebecor Media, but also includes a number of safeguards and a code of conduct.

OTTAWA – Industry Minister Christian Paradis opened the Wireless Canada Technology Showcase 2011 earlier today, but missed a prime opportunity to talk up the federal government’s digital economy strategy.
The Minister instead chose to toe the Conservative Party line, noting how the federal government is moving away from stimulus spending to spending restraint and providing tax cuts to businesses.
“Our agenda will shift emphasis away from stimulus and toward careful, considered and prudent action with a view to restraining government expenditures”, he said during his opening keynote address at the event.

TORONTO – ACTRA has reached a tentative settlement with the Association of Canadian Advertisers and the Institute of Communication Agencies to renew the national commercial agreement (NCA).
The NCA is the industry standard collective agreement that governs the production of commercials in Canada. The deal was struck Monday night with the assistance of a mediator following five months of bargaining, and ACTRA members will vote on the terms of the new agreement in the upcoming weeks. If the tentative settlement is ratified, the new agreement will go into effect on October 31, 2011.

MONTREAL – Bell Mobility launched its 4G LTE wireless network service Wednesday in Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph.
LTE (short for the 4th Generation ‘Long Term Evolution’ mobile standard) offers data speeds as fast as 75 megabits per second (Mbps) and typical speeds ranging between 12 and 25 Mbps. As the standard and products evolve, Bell said that speeds are expected to increase to as fast as 150 Mbps.
