GATINEAU – There's no Say No To Bell campaign this time around, but most of Bell's major competitors have again told the CRTC they are strongly against the takeover of Astral Media by BCE, even with the new promises to divest English-language TV assets.
Quebecor, Rogers and Telus all said they were against the deal in submissions sent to the Commission on Friday, the deadline for interventions in the new application for change of ownership.
Quebecor Media, which owns the Vidéotron cable provider and broadcaster TVA, "asks the Commission to categorically refuse the approval of the revised application," saying it would…

LAS VEGAS – While Gordon Smith, the president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, opened the 2013 NAB Show pushing an innovation agenda, urging his member broadcasters to explore new technology, and innovate any way they can because the future of over-the-air broadcasting has never been brighter, comments from one of his primary members later in the morning seemed to be at odds with Smith’s assertions.
“Our future lies in innovating and spurring technology that will deliver our highly valued content to any platform for generations to come,” said Smith in his opening keynote. “The time has come…

TORONTO – Canadian sports broadcaster Johnny Esaw passed away Saturday at the age of 87.
Regarded as a pioneer of sports broadcasting in Canada and known for his involvement with figure skating, football, international hockey, and the Olympics, Esaw died Saturday in Toronto after suffering from respiratory problems, CTV said yesterday in an announcement.
“I remember Johnny for the many careers that he launched and the industry leaders that he created. He had the rare combination of being a brilliant business man and incredibly creative,” said Rick Brace, president of specialty channels and CTV production.

IT’S WITH A WELL-EARNED sense of deja vu with which we stroll through the Las Vegas Convention Center today (Sunday). I’m not certain, but I believe this is my 10th NAB Show, which is the every-April pilgrimage of the world’s broadcast industry to the largest gathering of its kind.
As many Canadians do, I normally stay at the Flamingo Hotel – home of the famous Canadian Suite, where dozens of companies, including Cartt.ca, contribute to pay for three evenings of open bar networking, ably organized each year by the good folks at Applied Electronics. So with the conference locale, the…

TORONTO – The organizers of Canadian Music Week have announced that next year’s event will move from March to the warmer month of May and will be held May 6 to 10, 2014 at Toronto’s Eaton Centre Marriott Hotel.
According to CMW’s somewhat tongue-in-cheek announcement, the cold March weather was apparently the deciding factor for the date change: “After 31 years of freezing our asses off, we’re heeding your advice and moving to warmer forecasts.” Indeed, it did snow a couple of CMW days this year.
While some may welcome the change, others were concerned…

TUESDAY’S ARTICLE ON PACKAGING flexibility, the cost of sports, and the evolving demands of consumers unfortunately misinforms and misleads readers by providing a narrow view of a complex ecosystem. Several important facts are worth pointing out. (Note, for simplicity I’ll use “cable” to represent all cable, satellite, and IPTV distributors, except where specified).
FACT: Content costs are indeed increasing.
Creating and acquiring content is frustratingly immune to productivity and efficiency improvements demonstrated in industries like computers and technology. Creating content is entirely a people business. The cost goes up every year. And sports content costs are increasing the fastest. But…
