NEW YORK — Eurasia Group, a global political risk analysis firm, announced today Evan Solomon (above), known for hosting CTV News’ Power Play and Question Period programs, is joining the company’s management committee and becoming publisher of its subsidiary GZERO Media.
Solomon’s appointment is effective Oct. 17 and he will be based in Eurasia Group’s New York City office, says a press release announcing his appointment.
An emailed statement from CTV’s parent company Bell Media says “Solomon will continue to report regularly for CTV News as a Special Correspondent with a focus on Canadian politics and global affairs.”

TORONTO – Amazon’s Prime Video today announced production has started on a new Canadian Amazon Original documentary on the life and career of Ernie Coombs (above) – or as he is more commonly known, Mr. Dressup.
The feature-length documentary, which is currently untitled, will celebrate “the origins and history of Canada’s favourite children’s show, Mr. Dressup, which built a legacy of kindness, patience, inclusiveness, and creativity in 4,000 episodes across 29 years on CBC in Canada,” a press release says.

CBC/RADIO-CANADA HAS responded to an open letter penned by Quebecor president and CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau, published here on Cartt.ca earlier today.
In his open letter, Péladeau expressed discontent with the direction of the national public broadcaster and the fact the government did not include any direction to the CRTC to consider “the advertising dollars the CBC/Radio-Canada is gobbling up” when it told the Commission to reconsider its decision on the renewal of CBC/Radio-Canada’s licences.

IN JUNE, THE CRTC renewed CBC/Radio-Canada’s broadcasting licences on terms that caused widespread indignation. Dozens of organizations protested that the new conditions of licence constitute a major departure from the mission of a public broadcaster. Last Thursday, the Governor General in Council ordered the CRTC to reconsider its decision, bearing in mind that the national public broadcaster must continue to make “a significant contribution to the creation, presentation and dissemination of local news, children’s programming, original French-language programming and programming produced by independent producers.”

Disappointment expressed by multiple groups that the order does not mention Tandem
OTTAWA – Cabinet has referred the CBC’s licence renewal decision back to the CRTC.
The CRTC issued the decision renewing the licences for the Corporation’s English- and French-language audiovisual and audio services this past June. Following this, the Governor in Council received 16 petitions asking for the decision to be set aside or referred back to the Commission.

OTTAWA – The CBC’s Media Technology Monitor (MTM), released a new report today, which shows 45% of Canadian households with subscription video on demand (SVOD) accounts, share those accounts with other households.
“The vast majority of Canadian households have access to at least one SVOD service,” says a press release announcing the publication of the report, which considers how Canadians are borrowing and lending SVOD accounts.
“While francophones are less likely than anglophones to subscribe to SVODs, they are more likely to be sharing their subscriptions with others,” the release says.
