TORONTO – CBC took home a total of 14 medals – six gold, seven silver and one bronze – at the Promax/BDA 2005 Conference for Promotion and Broadcast Design held last week in New York City.
These awards put CBC head-to-head against the biggest and best in broadcast media around the world. Organizers often bill the awards as the Oscars of international television marketing.

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – Maybe things are getting faster at the Commission after all.
The CRTC today released its sixth annual Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report. The report assesses the impact of its regulations, policies and decisions on the Canadian broadcasting industry, in light of the objectives of the Broadcasting Act.
Beginning this year, publication has been moved up several months so that data contained in the report will be available to the Canadian public and the regulated industries on a more timely basis.

TORONTO – The CRTC’s satellite radio decision is the thin edge of the wedge that could bring down the Canadian cultural industry, says a coalition of arts groups.
That coalition (ACTRA, the Canadian Independent Record Production Association, the Communications, Energy & Paperworkers Union of Canada, the Directors Guild of Canada, Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, the National Campus & Community Radio Association, SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and the Writers’ Guild of Canada.) is demanding the federal government tell the Commission to overturn its June 16th decision on subscription radio.

REGINA – Access Communications announced today the launch of 11 new digital channels, five of which will be accompanied with a three-month free preview.

OTTAWA – Radio-Canada TV president Daniel Gourd has announced he will retire when he=is contract is up this November.

BANFF – CBC Television has joined Telefilm Canada in a $2 million pilot project to help get feature documentaries in Canadian theatres and on Canadian television.
CBC and Telefilm announced the project at the Banff World Television Festival this week.
For years, feature docs could not be funded through Telefilm’s Canada Feature Film Fund and were hard to program on TV because they need more than the usual one-hour slot.

BANFF – The federal government is promising better governance and more stable funding for the Canadian Television Fund and has begun addressing those needs with an announcement of $100 million worth of support to the CTF for 2006-07.
