TORONTO – Seems like every radio company not involved in a satellite radio investment has now jumped into an appeal of the CRTC’s licensing decision to federal cabinet.
Led by CHUM Ltd. and Astral Media (who were granted a terrestrial subscription radio license), the rest of the appellants are: CHIN Radio, CJRT-FM Inc., Fairchild Radio Group Ltd., O.K. MONTREAL – While Cogeco Inc.’s radio division is turning around, drawing larger audiences, the performance of the company’s television division, TQS, “obliges us to evaluate our forecasts for the media sector downwards for the 2006 fiscal year," Louis Audet, president and CEO of Cogeco, said today in presenting his company’s third quarter results.

TORONTO – "This appears to be an act of desperation by an association scared of progress," said Gregg Terrence, president of Indie Pool, about the recent jabs the Canadian Independent Record Producers Association has taken at his company.
"CIRPA’s comments are possibly libelous and are disrespectful to thousands of Canadian artists that signed a petition supporting satellite radio. Let’s be clear here, CIRPA represents record companies, lawyers and accountants, not unsigned artists."

TORONTO – About 100 technical employees at broadcaster Alliance Atlantis have voted to join the Canadian Media Guild.
The union has filed an application with the Canada Industrial Relations Board to represent about 100 technical employees at the Toronto-based company which owns and operates channels such as BBC Canada, Showcase, Food Network Canada, Life, and HGTV.

The CRTC today released its sixth annual Broadcasting Policy Monitoring Report. The report assesses the impact of its regulations, policies and decisions on the Canadian broadcasting industry, in light of the objectives of the Broadcasting Act.

TORONTO – The CRTC’s satellite radio decision is the thin edge of the wedge that could bring down the Canadian cultural industry, says a coalition of arts groups.
