TORONTO – The Canadian Media Guild didn’t like the latest contract offer from the CBC.
In a release today, CMG said “CBC management tabled a so-called comprehensive proposal late yesterday that is neither comprehensive nor a proposal. It is little more than a compilation of language rejected by the Guild bargaining committee and by our membership during the strike vote.”
CMG says the offer “includes the offensive language on employment status that, despite claims to the contrary, makes no commitment to maintain permanent staff but actually provides the ability to make virtually every future hire a contract employee,” says…

OTTAWA – CBC Television said last night that another of its female journalists will be Canada’s next Governor General.
According to the report, repeated by Reuters, Haitian-born Quebecker Michaelle Jean, 48 will announced as the new G-G this morning at 11 a.m. Jean will be Canada’s first black governor general and will replace another former CBC journalist, Adrienne Clarkson, who has had the job since 1999, on October 1st.
The award-winning Jean is currently the host of CBC and CBC Newsworld’s The Passionate Eye and Rough Cuts and has hosted numerous shows on RDI as well….

MONTREAL – Satellite radio will boost French culture says a new study commissioned by Canadian Satellite Radio.
From July 14 to July 19, 2005, CSR (the partnership between Canadian John Bitove and XM Satellite Radio) had the Omnitel Omnibus group survey Quebec residents to gauge their interest in satellite radio.
Predictably, the study found that Quebeckers were solidly behind satellite radio. TORONTO – With less than two weeks left before the Canadian Media Guild members working at the CBC would be in a legal strike position, the union today reported “modest progress”.
However, it cautioned that much still had to be worked out.

GATINEAU – The CRTC will hold a hearing October 3rd in Charlottetown, to consider nine radio license applications, among other items.
In January, the Commission issued a call for applications for Charlottetown, and ended up with five, as outlined below. Two are AM-to-FM conversions, the others for new stations. All are for English stations. Charlottetown is currently served by five stations (two of which are CBC) and its population (including the immediate surrounding area) is just over 58,000, according to Statistics Canada.

I WAS A UNION MEMBER TWICE: For several summers as a labourer installing gas pipeline in Northern Ontario and for a four month stint as a part-time Bookmobile driver and librarian in Guelph, Ont.
I lived for a few years in Sault Ste. Marie and saw what the Steelworkers have had to go through there with Algoma Steel. I lived in Windsor for three years and the Canadian Auto Workers union was always front and centre.
I say all this to illustrate that I think I have a bit of a grasp on what the union/corporation relationship can be….
