OTTAWA – The CRTC said today that while many things should change about the Canadian Television Fund, Shaw Communications and Quebecor Media should not be able to opt out of paying into it.

TORONTO – At a media conference today in Toronto, Rogers Communications vice-chairman Phil Lind will go on the attack once again against the conventional broadcasters’ goal of gaining a fee for carriage – and against his fear the CRTC might create such a fee and tie it to the production of local news.

TORONTO – The CBC has signed a broadcast agreement with Soccer Canada for the broadcast rights to the inaugural Nutrilite Canadian Champions League, which is the Canadian qualifying tournament for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Champions League, it was announced Friday.
Three Canadian teams – Toronto FC, Montreal Impact and the Vancouver Whitecaps – will compete for the right to represent Canada at the new continental club championship, the CONCACAF Champions League.
The CONCACAF Champions League winner will then qualify as the CONCACAF representative at the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup.

OTTAWA – George Cooper and the Honourable Joseph Handley have been named to the board of directors of the CBC/Radio-Canada, it was announced Friday by Canadian Heritage.
Handley is the retired Premier of the Northwest Territories, a position he occupied from 2003 to 2007. Throughout his political career in the Northwest Territories, he held many positions, including Minister of Finance; Minister of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development; and Minister of Aboriginal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Housing.

MONTREAL – CBC/Radio-Canada said Thursday it would be promoting Quebec City’s 400th anniversary celebrations across all of its platforms (TV, radio and Internet).
The public broadcaster’s initiatives include setting up two permanent radio studios, one English and one French, and a TV studio on Bassin Louise in the Old Port of Quebec City from June to September. Dubbed the Espace 400e, it will be the central local studio for the summer season. Shows, such as Breakaway, hosted by radio personality Jacquie Czernin, will be broadcast live from Espace 400e, weekdays at 4 p.m.

CALGARY – Star Choice lashed out at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Friday, accusing it of misleading the public over carriage issues around the CBC Saskatchewan TV channel and RDI.
“The CBC’s suggestion that we are breaching regulatory rules is also wrong. Star Choice carries 79 local and regional television stations, including 16 CBC network stations and local affiliates. By comparison, Star Choice carries a total of 13 CTV network stations and local affiliates,” said Peter Bissonnette, president of Star Choice-owner Shaw Communications Inc.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Broadcasting Corp./Radio-Canada asked the CRTC this week to order satellite TV distributor Star Choice to immediately include RDI in its digital basic to subscribers in Anglophone markets.
It is the second complaint filed this week to the CRTC by the public broadcaster.
“Despite repeated efforts on the part of the CBC/Radio-Canada, the corporation has been unable to secure carriage of RDI on Star Choie’s basic service in Anglophone markets.
