Digital strategy, broadband for urban poor, not addressed
OTTAWA – After years of neglect, outright disdain and budget cuts from the previous government, CBC/Radio-Canada is getting what some consider a much needed infusion of cash. The Liberals’ Budget 2016 is injecting $675 million over the next five years into the national public broadcaster.
The money – $75 million this fiscal year and $150 million in each of the four subsequent years – will be used “to disseminate and support world-class Canadian content and to provide Canadians with better access to programs and services in the digital era,” said the budget.

OTTAWA – With Canada’s paid TV subscriptions in decline, fibre optic (IPTV) TV service subscriptions continue to grow and have overtaken satellite for second place behind cable distribution, says a new report from Media Technology Monitoring (MTM).

TORONTO – CBC Sports will continue its hold on rights to the World Cup and World Championship Alpine, Nordic, Freestyle, Snowboard, Bobsleigh and Skeleton events after inking a new agreement with Infront Sports & Media.
The new media rights agreement includes live, delayed, repeat and video-on-demand coverage of up to 250 International Ski Federation (FIS) and International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) events across CBC Sports’ TV, online and mobile platforms over the next five years.

OTTAWA – Former Société Radio-Canada parliamentary correspondent Joyce Napier has joined CTV News as its Ottawa bureau chief.
Napier, (pictured), began her career as a print journalist, working as a Montréal correspondent for The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press, before becoming a reporter for La Presse. She joined CBC as a television reporter in Montréal in 1989 and moved to Radio-Canada in 1992, which included roles as its Middle East correspondent and Washington bureau chief. GATINEAU – The arrival of skinny basic TV programming packages and pick-and-pay options on Tuesday mark a “new era of choice for Canadian television viewers”, according to the CRTC.
Effective immediately, all licensed television service providers must offer an affordable basic package (a.k.a skinny basic) costing no more than $25 per month, not including equipment.
