Here’s what Canadian telecoms are doing in response to the situation in Ukraine (updated)


CANADIAN TELECOMS ARE helping customers connect to family and friends in Ukraine by waiving charges for calls and texts from Canada to Ukraine, and in some cases they are waiving roaming charges for customers currently in Ukraine as well.

Companies that have made such announcements include:

Sasktel announced today it will automatically waive long-distance charges for its wireless, landline, and business calls from Canada to Ukraine, international text messaging fees for texts sent from Canada to Ukraine, and roaming charges for calls, text and data overages for its customers who are currently in Ukraine.

Cogeco tweeted today it is waiving all long-distance charges to Ukraine.

Eastlink also tweeted today, announcing it is waiving home phone and mobility long-distance charges from Canada to Ukraine.

Xplornet sent out a tweet this morning, which says the company is waiving all home phone and mobility long-distance charges for calls from Canada to Ukraine.

Distributel and Primus announced today they are waiving all home phone long-distance charges for calls to Ukraine.

Shaw tweeted last night it is waiving international long-distance and SMS fees for calls and texts made to Ukraine.

Bell tweeted yesterday it will waive all home phone as well as consumer mobility postpaid long-distance charges for calls from Canada to Ukraine. (Bell’s Virgin Plus made the same announcement.)

Rogers announced yesterday it is waiving long-distance and SMS charges to Ukraine for Rogers, Fido and chatr customers. Like Sasktel, Rogers also announced it is temporarily waiving roaming charges for its customers in Ukraine as well.

Telus said yesterday it is waiving long-distance charges for calls and texts to Ukraine. (Koodo made the same announcement.)

Videotron announced yesterday it is suspending long-distance charges for calls from Canada to Ukraine for all of its residential, business and mobile accounts.

For the most part, these announcements are effective immediately until March 31, 2022, with the exception of Telus and Koodo, which are waiving charges from now until March 12, 2022.

Update: 

TextNow announced this evening (Feb. 25) that effective immediately it is making calls to Ukraine free for a limited time, with no credit card required.

Update, Feb. 28: 

TekSavvy informed Cartt.ca via email today it is also waiving long-distance charges to Ukraine for its residential and business phone customers until further notice.

Update, March 1: 

Beanfield announced on Feb. 25 it will waive all long-distance fees for calls from Canada to Ukraine for its residential and commercial customers, effective immediately and until further notice.
