Virgin Radio flames out in Ottawa, debuts in Edmonton

OTTAWA – Virgin is out and The Bear is back on radio airwaves in Ottawa.

After flipping to the Virgin format in January 2009, the Astral-owned station said Friday that The Bear is back, and “promises listeners a return to more of the rock music that they know and love”.

"The Bear is committed to operating a highly entertaining and successful radio station that promises listeners exciting programming and more of the rock music that they know and love," said brand director Bruce Gilbert, in the announcement. "We’ve been listening intently to our audience and in response to popular demand we’ve brought The Bear brand and Ottawa’s Best Rock back to the Nation’s Capital".

Elsewhere, 104-9 Virgin Radio Edmonton launched on Friday afternoon, replacing the EZ Rock brand in the market.  Amid promises of the “hottest programming and most entertaining personalities”, the station also announced the return of popular hosts Pepper and Dylan to the morning show.

“We’re thrilled to bring the internationally recognized Virgin brand to Edmonton,” said Stewart Meyers, VP and GM of Astral Radio Edmonton, in the announcement. “Today’s launch is a great demonstration of our commitment to offer highly entertaining and exciting radio programming that adds value to our listeners and advertisers alike. 104-9 Virgin Radio will provide a more vibrant and engaging experience that will surely delight our existing fans and attract a whole new audience to the station”.

Astral also operates radio stations under the Virgin brand in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal.
