Videotron customers can now use both IPv4 and IPv6

MONTREAL – Videotron has begun implementing the IPv6 Internet Protocol, becoming the first major Internet service provider in Canada to offer all of its customers IPv6 access.

The company said Wednesday that a Beta version of IPv6 is available to residential customers who want it and who have the compatible Wi-Fi router, and that the new standard will eventually become “an integral part” of its cable Internet access service.

“The roll-out of the Beta version of IPv6 will give early adopters a chance to get in on the ground floor,” said Pierre Roy, VP of engineering, research and development, in the announcement. “IPv6 is an important development that will help keep the Internet as open and innovative as the technology permits.”

Registered customers of Videotron will be able to actively participate in World IPv6 Day, coordinated by the Internet Society (ISOC), the international organization that governs the development of the Internet.  With the remaining supply of available IPv4 network addresses dwindling, IPv6 is being touted to support the ever increasing number of subscribers, devices, and services that need to connect to the Internet.
