TerreStar completes testing of new voice and data bird

TORONTO – Mobile communications provider TerreStar Networks has completed its in-orbit testing for TerreStar-1, the world’s largest commercial communications satellite.

The satellite “met or exceeded all of its performance metrics”, the company announced Thursday, with the key test validating that its 2GHz S Band reflector was performing as designed.  It is the 18 meter reflector that enables voice, data and video communications to be transmitted to mobile devices the size of a typical smart phone.

"We are proud to report the space segment of the TerreStar network is now complete," said TerreStar Canada EVP Steve Nichols, in the press release. "Once the integration with the advanced GBBF (ground based beam forming) system and the all-IP core network is complete, TerreStar, with its channel partners, will be ready to offer substantial benefits to wireless users in Canada through its ubiquitous North American mobile network."
