Telus offers early device upgrade program

TORONTO – Telus has rolled out an early device upgrade program which it says will make the cell phone ownership experience even simpler.

The ‘Clear and Simple Device Upgrade’ program creates a transparent linkage between the real price of new wireless devices and the discount customers receive when they select an optional one, two or three year term with Telus.  Customers wishing to upgrade to a new device before the end of their term will pay an Early Device Upgrade Fee (EDUF) equivalent to the unrecovered portion of the original handset discount, and can then sign up for a new term with promotional pricing on a new device.

“Smarter and more powerful smart phones are coming to market faster than ever, so we built this program to help our customers upgrade their devices at any time after completing six months of their contract term”, said chief marketing officer, David Fuller, in the announcement. “Our customers no longer have to wait until their contract terms expire before they are eligible for a discount on a new handset.”

Telus said that the EDUF is based on the number of months remaining in a customer’s term, and the closer they are to the end of their contract term, the lower their EDUF will be.  For example, the EDUF for feature phones will be $5 for each month remaining in the term; the EDUF for smart phones will be $10 for every month remaining in the term; and the EDUF for premium smart phones will be $15 for each month remaining in the term.
