Telus heats up competition in Canada’s north

YELLOWKNIFE, NWT – Northern Canada is quickly becoming Canada’s hottest telco market, as Telus announced today it will offer its wireless products and services to customers in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

As of September 6, Telus smartphone and other devices, as well as its SharePlus phone plans with unlimited talk, text and shared data, will be offered in these two territories at the same price as elsewhere in Canada.

Telus’s entry into Canada’s north follows just weeks after Iristel announced it had expanded its local phone service to all three territories.

“We are committed to bringing all Canadians, whether urban or rural, in the spectacular north and from coast to coast, our world-class network and broad range of the latest smartphones and devices. We look forward to serving even more communities across Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut as Telus’ 4G and 4G LTE coverage expands,” said Telus president and CEO Darren Entwistle in a release.

The carrier said it is planning to open retail store locations in Yellowknife and Whitehorse later this year through Petron Communications, a long-time TELUS authorized dealer serving rural communities in northern B.C.

To celebrate today’s launch, Telus said it will donate $25 from the sale of each new smartphone that activates a Yellowknife phone number to the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation in Yellowknife. The proceeds will be used to purchase new equipment for the hospital’s obstretics unit.

In the Yukon, $25 from every Whitehorse phone number activation will support new technology to aid in the early detection of developmental disabilities at Yukon Child Development Centre.

Both fundraising initiatives are part of Telus’s Phones for Good campaign, and will run from September 6, 2013 to May 6, 2014, contributing up to a maximum of $25,000 for each charity.
