Iristel extends northern local phone service to Iqaluit, now in all three Territories

IQALUIT – Promising choice, lower prices and advanced telephone services, Iristel announced today that its local phone service is now available to residents of the capital of Nunavut.

Iristel say its local phone service, which will be available to homeowners and businesses in Iqaluit through Iristel’s local agent, Qikiqtaaluk Information Technology Corp. (QITC), will allow customers to keep their existing phone numbers.

Maged Bishara, the company’s VP of operations and national sales, said the cost of Iristel’s local phone service will be “drastically less” than what rival NorthwesTel  currently charges.  Business customers, for example, could avoid paying up to $20,000 in hardware costs with a multiline PBX phone system for business hosted by Iristel in the cloud.

Other features of Iristel’s local service include call waiting, three-way calling and voicemail to email – all of which have never been available to Iqaluit customers until now. Iristel’s service also includes free visual call display, free caller ID and free Caller ID blocking with no activation fees, hidden charges or contracts.

“Our network serves customers from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and all the way up to the Arctic, and it is safe to say we’ve never had so many enquiries, felt so much pent up demand for choice as we’ve experienced in Iqaluit,” said Iristel president and CEO Samer Bishay in a release.

With today’s launch in the capital of Nunavut, Iristel has extended its Northern service to all three territories. It launched its service in Yellowknife, Whitehorse and Inuvik last December.

The CRTC’s decision in 2011 to open up competition in Canada’s North effectively ended NorthwesTel’s monopoly in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The Commission held a two-day hearing in June to review the regulatory framework and proposed modernization plan for the Bell subsidiary.

Licensed by the CRTC as a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) since 2000, Iristel also offers telecom services such as virtual faxing that automatically converts paper faxes to digital and delivers them as email, video conferencing, hosted telephone systems, IP trunking and wholesale services.
