No spam text guarantee from Telus

VANCOUVER – While BCE deals with a few other things, Telus today confirmed that wireless clients have never been required to pay for spam text messages – and announced an even easier way for customers to receive credits for any spam text messages they might receive. Beginning August 24, clients can simply send any spam message to 7726 with the word SPAM in the body of the message and their account will be adjusted automatically. The credit will be processed with no questions asked of the client by Telus. This change has no impact on any Telus mobile email… Continue Reading

COMMENTARY: Auction means Bell, Telus, face costly decision

AS THE ADVANCED wireless spectrum auction gets under way today, there are a couple of things that are clear. First, Canadian consumers will see several new wireless operators (one or two national, some more regional) inside of 18 months after the auction’s end in three to five weeks, driving down retail prices and increasing competition for their business. Second, thanks to the new rules favoring any newcomers to Canadian wireless that demand mandated roaming on the existing incumbents’ networks, Rogers Communications is going to take on most of that burden. It will tax the company’s system somewhat,… Continue Reading

Telus trucks ready for anything

KELOWNA – The primary need when disaster happens anywhere is communication. Help can’t be co-ordinated or properly delivered if people can’t talk to each other. And if the phone lines are down and police radios out of commission, aid workers will certainly struggle. It was this primary challenge Telus had in mind when it built two SatCOLT units (Cost: $1.3 million each). SatCOLT stands for Satellite Cellsite on Light Truck and was pioneered Stateside by Sprint and is essentially a fully mobile telephone system. “It’s a mobile cell site on wheels,” says Ken Green, the man in charge of… Continue Reading

Telus results show wireless-wireline tug of war

VANCOUVER – As at many traditional telcos, growth on the wireless side at Telus is offsetting the losses they are all experiencing in their conventional wireline business. The company today reported first quarter revenue of $2.35 billion, a 6.6% increase from a year ago. That performance was generated by 10% growth in wireless revenue and 19% growth in wireline data revenue during the three months ended March 31st, as compared to Q1 ’07. Consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) increased 24% to $950 million, largely due to the $173.5 million net-cash settlement feature expense recorded in… Continue Reading

Telus ordered to rebate customers

GATINEAU – Telus has been ordered by the CRTC to provide rebates to customers who paid a $2.95 per month access fee but didn’t make any long-distance calls during the month. Telus however is not required to rebate customers who made long-distance telephone calls during the same month. Local service rates are regulated by the CRTC and have to be either pre-approved by the commission or, in larger areas where it has stopped regulating rates are subject to a price ceiling. Long distance service, however, is not regulated. Telus had contended it did not need pre-approval or to abide by… Continue Reading

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Telus rejects all fee for carriage

Dear Editor, IN YOUR NEWS REPORT today you suggested Telus supported some form of fee for carriage in Quebec. To be clear, we are categorically opposed to FFC under any circumstance and in any jurisdiction. We obviously agreed with vice-chair Arpin that the CRTC can develop different rules in Quebec to reflect regional differences, that is something which is provided for in the Broadcasting Act, but we still oppose FFC as a solution, regardless of any regional differences. We recognize TQS is in serious difficulty. But FFC won’t fix its difficulties. The roots of its problems are deeper. As… Continue Reading

Telus tells CRTC to avoid rabbit hole

GATINEAU – Telus Corp., a relatively new entrant into the broadcast distribution field with the IPTV service it launched in 2006, says it would prefer the regulatory status quo than a descent into a “rabbit hole of new regulations for problems which simply don’t exist”. In a presentation before the CRTC’s hearings on broadcast distribution and specialty services Wednesday, Telus’ vice-president for wireless, broadband and content policy Michael Hennessy said he was concerned that “false assumptions” could persuade the Commission to add regulations when what the industry needs is space to flourish. “The future has to be based on… Continue Reading

CRTC to rule on Telus fees tomorrow

OTTAWA – The CRTC will rule on Telus’ controversial network access fee tomorrow and Cartt.ca will have complete coverage of the decision. The CRTC is reviewing the new fee Telus added to local phone bills after competitor Yak Communications filed a formal complaint last year. The commission has also received complaints from over 400 B.C. residents since the $2.95 charge was added to phone bills last November. The monthly fee to access Telus’s long-distance network is charged to customers who haven’t signed up for long-distance calling plans with Telus or any of its competitors. Customers are charged whether or… Continue Reading

Telus says be aware of phone scammers, don’t give out personal info

CALGARY – Telus Corp. is telling its customers not to give out personal information to people who call, and to hang up on them as a phone scam has emerged in British Columbia, Alberta and Alberta. The scam involves someone calling who claims to work for Telus and offers a deal on a phone service. The scam artist asks for personal information, such as social insurance number, credit card number and Telus account numbers. Telus warns that those customers who hand over the requested information could suffer identity theft or other fraud. “Any legitimate Telus agent calling you will have… Continue Reading
