BREAKING NEWS: Shaw to restore CTF funding

OTTAWA – Saying he is "sufficiently assured" that change is in the works with the Canadian Television Fund, Jim Shaw told the Standing Committee of Canadian Heritage this morning "we will restore our payments," to the CTF. As reported by Cartt.ca, Shaw began withholding its $5 million a month in monthly payments to the $250 million annual fund, saying the fund is not accountable, pays for too few shows that are success stories and that too much money goes towards programs that appear on the CBC. Shaw’s regulatory head Ken Stein said that the CTF funding, when established over… Continue Reading

Shaw won’t pay, wants “fundamental change”

CALGARY – True to its word, Shaw Communications will not be resuming monthly payments to the Canadian Television Fund. On Friday, Minister of Canadian Heritage Bev Oda was informed of the decision by the company which owns Star Choice and Shaw Cable – and is the largest CTF contributor. "I am disappointed to learn that Shaw is not going to resume their payments to the Canadian Television Fund," she said. "Clearly Shaw does not recognize the importance of abiding by regulations in a regulated world. "All cable and direct-to-home satellite companies are regulated by the CRTC," continued Oda’s statement…. Continue Reading

New CRTC chair tells Shaw and Quebecor to “play by the rules”; urges CTF board to act, too

GATINEAU – In his first public statement since becoming chairman of the CRTC, Konrad von Finckenstein today told Shaw Communications and Videotron that they should resume their required monthly payments to the Canadian Television Fund. However, he also told the leaders of the CTF to start addressing the concerns raised by both companies, which have been reported on repeatedly by Cartt.ca over the past month. The Commission statement reads: "The CRTC recognizes the important role that the funds administered by the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) play in supporting the production of Canadian programs. This programming in turn assists Canadian… Continue Reading

Shaw rejects CTF arguments

CALGARY – Shaw Communications has again rejected the arguments made by those who support the Canadian Television Fund and its aims. Today the company "categorically rejected" a suggestion made by former Shaw executive Richard Stursberg, who is now CBC TV’s executive vice-president, that withholding payments to the fund will "unravel" the Canadian broadcasting system. "It is unconstructive and misleading. The CBC is the biggest recipient of CTF monies. Canadians deserve a fair and independent accounting of how billions of dollars that they paid out in taxes and fees were spent by the CTF and the CBC," said Jim Shaw,… Continue Reading

Shaw reinforces its CTF opposition

CALGARY – In case anyone was wondering whether or not Shaw Communications was prepared to soften its stance on paying into the Canadian Television Fund, a press release this afternoon put any such thoughts to rest. "Shaw Communications today announced its conclusion that the Canadian Television Fund ("CTF") is simply the wrong way to support the production and exhibition of high quality Canadian programming," says the release. "The CTF is broken and cannot be fixed" said Jim Shaw, CEO. "Our customers pay for the CTF through their taxes and subscription fees. We would prefer to return the money to… Continue Reading

Funeral for Les Shaw to be held today

TORONTO – Leslie E. Shaw, the older brother of Shaw Communications chairman JR Shaw, died last Wednesday in his sleep at his Barbados home. He was 79. While JR built a formidable Canadian communications firm (in which Les owned a minority interest and sat on its board for years) the elder Shaw brother built a global energy services company, ShawCor, from a general construction company in southwestern Ontario founded by their father, Francis in the 1930s. (JR worked for the original family business, too, setting up its first western base in Edmonton in the early 1960s and soon launched… Continue Reading

Shaw suspends TV fund payments

CALGARY – Saying he wants an accounting of exactly how the Canadian Television Fund money is spent and where the value is, Shaw Communications CEO Jim Shaw says until he gets that and is satisfied, his company will no longer pay into the CTF. That’s potentially a huge blow for the fund, since Shaw – also the owner of DTH company Star Choice – is the largest BDU contributor, paying approximately $60 million into the fund last year. (However, the CRTC’s BDU regulations say all TV distributors must pay a percentage of revenues into the fund, which is doled… Continue Reading

Videotron follows Shaw’s lead and pulls CTF funding

MONTREAL – Videotron announced late Tuesday afternoon that it won’t be making its regular monthly contributions to the Canadian Television Fund either. In a letter to the CTF, Pierre Karl Péladeau, president and CEO of Videotron parent Quebecor Inc. said it won’t pay and has asked the Bev Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage, to launch a thorough review of the fund’s management and membership structures. In a press release, Péladeau said he feels "deep dissatisfaction with the Fund’s governance, performance and direction" and complained that "Fund managers pay little heed to the main private-sector contributors to the Fund and give… Continue Reading
