Shaw reunites ten families across Canada

CALGARY – Shaw has selected the ten winners of its Amazing Family Reunion contest after receiving over 5000 nominations. Launched last November,  the contest asked Canadians to create a virtual scrapbook page sharing their story of why they would like to reunite their family.  Ten deserving families – from Victoria and Surrey, BC; Edmonton and Red Deer, AB; Saskatoon, SK; Thunder Bay and Port Perry ON; and Wickham, QC – were chosen by a panel of judges to create their dream family reunion valued up to $25,000. Shaw Media hires sports VP

TORONTO – With an application before the Commission for a new sports channel license, Shaw Media has hired Christos Nikitopoulos as vice-president, sports programming. He will be responsible for developing an integrated, multi-platform sports broadcasting strategy for Shaw Media, says a company spokesperson. He began work February 7th. Nikitopoulos has worked in sports media for over 14 years, most recently as vice-president of programming and revenue planning for the Olympic Media Consortium. Shaw raising another $400 million

CALGARY – Shaw Communications announced Monday the reopening of its 6.75% senior unsecured notes, due 2039, for an additional C$400 million. The net proceeds of this offering will be used for repayment of debt incurred under Shaw’s credit facility and for working capital and general corporate purposes. Closing is scheduled to occur on February 17, 2011 and, based on the closing purchase price, the effective yield of the senior notes being offered, if held to maturity, is 6.961%, says the company’s press release. Cogeco boosts speeds in Shawinigan

MONTREAL – Cogeco Cable announced Tuesday the launch of its Ultimate 30 and Ultimate 50 High Speed Internet (HSI) packages for consumers in Shawinigan, Québec, as well as its new Business Ultimate 50 package for businesses. Cogeco says the three packages, powered by DOCSIS 3.0, offer advantages in speed and pricing compared to competitors. The Ultimate 30 package offers speeds of up to 30 Mbps for downloads and up to 1.5 Mbps for uploads with a monthly download cap of 100 GB. BMO downgrades Shaw due to “accelerating” threat from Telus’ Optik TV

TORONTO – BMO Capital Markets has downgraded its investment rating on Shaw Communications from outperform to market perform, based on the growing competitive threat from Telus, which could eventually capture one third of the B.C.-Alberta TV subscription market, says the bank. “We are growing increasingly concerned with Shaw’s ability to withstand competitive pressures from Telus, specifically its Optik TV service,” writes Tim Casey, cable and media analyst at BMO Capital Markets, in his note to clients.
