Netflix subs in Canada top 5.2 million; Crave, Shomi trail considerably: report

Cord cutting intent strengthening, as is skinny basic awareness TORONTO – According to new research from Toronto’s Solutions Research Group, Netflix now counts more than 5 million subscribing households in Canada, while nascent Canadian efforts CraveTV (owned by Bell Media) and Shomi (owned by Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications) together is estimated to have about one-seventh the number of subscribers. The figures come from SRG’s ongoing Digital Life Canada syndicated research. Former Telus exec named CFO at Corus

TORONTO – John Gossling has been named executive vice-president and chief financial officer at Corus Entertainment where he will replace the retiring Tom Peddie. Gossling left Telus less than a month ago after 3 ½ years.  His prior career experiences include CFO at CTVglobemedia Inc., VP financial operations at Rogers Communications and CFO at Rogers Wireless, and partner at KPMG LLP. Skinny basic TV, pick and pay, score high marks with Canadians: J.D. Power

TORONTO – TV service providers offering cost and channel choices through skinny basic TV programming packages receive higher marks in customer satisfaction, according to new data from J.D. Power. The Canadian Television Provider Customer Satisfaction Study measures overall satisfaction with television service providers based on six factors (in order of importance): performance and reliability; cost of service; programming; communication; billing; and customer service. Shaftesbury’s Scott Garvie named new CMPA chair

TORONTO – Scott Garvie, SVP business and legal affairs at Shaftesbury, was named the new chair of the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) this week by the CMPA board of directors. He replaces Jamie Brown (Frantic Films) who is stepping down after two successful years as chair.
