Phil Hartling now president of Rogers Wireless division; Two more executives reportedly leaving

TORONTO — Although Rogers Communications has not made a formal announcement, a recent change to the Rogers leadership team webpage indicates Phil Hartling (above) has been promoted to the position of president of the company’s wireless division. Last week, we told Cartt.ca readers about a Globe and Mail report that said Dave Fuller, then president of Rogers Wireless, was leaving the company. Another Globe article published yesterday said Dan Golberg, senior vice-president of strategy and corporate development, and Sevaun Palvetzian, chief communications officer, are also leaving Rogers. Telesat partners with ENCQOR 5G to advance 5G deployment

OTTAWA — Satellite operator Telesat and ENCQOR 5G, a Canada-Quebec-Ontario initiative focused on 5G technology research and innovation, announced today a new strategic partnership to accelerate the delivery of next-generation 5G networks across Canada. “In cooperation with the ENCQOR 5G program, Telesat will conduct demonstrations, trials and pilots that will advance 5G connectivity, particularly to industries operating in rural areas,” reads a Telesat press release. “This includes the utilization of the ENCQOR testbed, satellite assets, as well as national and international 5G infrastructures. It’s official: Tony Staffieri is now president and CEO of Rogers

TORONTO — Rogers Communications announced late this afternoon Tony Staffieri (above) has been appointed as the company’s president and CEO, effective immediately. Staffieri’s appointment follows a months-long period of turmoil at the company last fall during which board chair Edward Rogers sought to remove previous CEO Joe Natale, who eventually left the company in mid-November. At the time, Staffieri was appointed interim president and CEO. Previously, Staffieri was Rogers’s chief financial officer until his abrupt departure at the end of September, before the power struggle at the company became public knowledge. Broadcasting revenue declines 6.6% in 2019-2020, still ahead of OTT, CRTC says

GATINEAU – Revenue from Canadian broadcasting services declined 6.6% to $15.8 billion in 2019-2020 compared to 2018-2019, the CRTC says. This is highlighted in the broadcasting portion of the CRTC’s Communications Market Report (CMR; formally the Communications Monitoring Report), released last month, which covers the broadcast year spanning from Sept. 1, 2019, to Aug. 31, 2020, and as such includes around six months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The $15.8 billion in revenue does not include revenues from Internet-based services, known as over-the-top services (OTT), operating under the CRTC’s digital media exemption order. Telecommunications revenues down 1.4% in 2020, CRTC says

GATINEAU – Total revenue for Canada’s telecommunications sector was $53.4 billion in 2020, a decrease of 1.4% compared to 2019, the CRTC says. This is according to the telecom portion of the CRTC’s Communications Market Report (CMR; formally the Communications Monitoring Report), released last month. The report features data from 2020, during which the Covid-19 pandemic began, non-essential travel was curtailed and many Canadians ended up working from home. During this time, there were higher volumes of wireline voice calling, significantly increased Internet data usage and decreased mobile roaming, the report explains. Dave Fuller leaving Rogers, Globe reports

TORONTO – Dave Fuller (above), president of Rogers Wireless, is leaving the company, according to the Globe and Mail. A report today says an unnamed source told the Globe Fuller, who has been president of Rogers’ wireless division since April 2021, will be replaced by Phil Hartling, a long-time Rogers executive who was in charge of expanding Rogers rurally last year. An update on STIR/SHAKEN and the fight against fraudulent calls

OTTAWA – Fraudulent calls continue to be an issue for Canadians despite the recent implementation of measures to try to combat them. In April of this year, the CRTC directed telecommunications service providers (TSPs) to implement STIR/SHAKEN (Secure Telephony Identity Revisited/Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs), which is intended to combat caller ID spoofing, by Nov. 30 as a condition of providing telecommunication services. As of Nov. 30, TSPs are expected to “certify whether a caller’s identity can be trusted by verifying the caller ID information for Internet Protocol-based voice calls,” a CRTC press release explains. Rogers completes construction on fibre-optic network in Garafraxa Woods

NFTC begins construction in Mono and Amaranth DUFFERIN, Ont. – Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced today Rogers Communications finished construction on a fibre-optic network that now offers high-speed Internet to 107 homes and businesses in Dufferin County in the community of Garafraxa Woods. Rogers broke ground on the project, which was announced in September 2020, this past summer. The Governments of Canada and Ontario contributed $419,036 to the project through SWIFT, according to SWIFT’s website. CRTC Broadband Fund supporting 4 new projects in Alberta and Nova Scotia

OTTAWA and GATINEAU – The CRTC announced yesterday four projects in Alberta and Nova Scotia will receive up to $8.8 million in funding from its Broadband Fund. “The projects will target approximately 680 households in five communities, including four Indigenous communities,” a CRTC press release says. ATG Arrow Technology Group Limited Partnership was allocated up to $7.9 million to build or upgrade local fixed access infrastructure in three Indigenous communities in Alberta, according to the CRTC’s decision on the matter.
