Rogers, Shaw continue to work with government; Quebecor CEO weighs in
OTTAWA – Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne will not allow Rogers Communications to acquire all of Shaw Communications’ wireless licences, he said in a statement today.
“The wholesale transfer of Shaw’s wireless licences to Rogers is fundamentally incompatible with our government’s policies for spectrum and mobile service competition, and I will simply not permit it,” the statement reads.

OTTAWA – Two companies that retransmitted Videotron television signals to hotel rooms were found liable for copyright violations during a certain period, a Federal Court judge ruled last week.
Back in February 2021, as reported by Cartt.ca, Videotron filed a lawsuit against a trio of companies for allegedly redistributing its TVA channels to hotels by projecting a single signal of the channels to multiple hotel rooms, which the Montreal-based company said contravened the Copyright Act because it was allegedly done over the Internet.

MONTREAL – Quebecor Inc. today reported its fourth quarter and full year financial results for 2021, which show revenue increased 3.2% and 5.5% respectively compared to the same periods in 2020.
For the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2021, Quebecor’s revenues were $1.2 billion, up from $1.1 billion in the same quarter of 2020. For the full year, revenues were $4.6 billion, an increase from $4.3 billion in 2020.

Telus claims Videotron subsidiary propped up to get western Canadian 5G licenses

TORONTO – Telus argued in federal court earlier today a Videotron subsidiary in western Canada was propped up to qualify it for a slice of 5G spectrum outside of its home territory.

MONTREAL – TVA Group Inc. announced today its fourth quarter results, which show operating revenues increased by $24.3 million to $171.9 million compared to the same quarter in 2020.
TVA, which is a subsidiary of Quebecor, also reported consolidated adjusted EBITDA was $28.7 million for the quarter ended Dec. 31, a $17.4 million “unfavourable variance from the same quarter in 2020,” a press release says.
The company’s broadcasting segment reported adjusted EBITDA was $20.5 million in Q4 2021, a $16.2 million unfavourable variance from the same quarter in 2020.
