Quebec’s film, television and interactive media industries unite against proposed tax credit cuts

MONTREAL – Self-described key players in Quebec’s audiovisual industry have joined forces following last week’s announcement of cutbacks in the latest provincial budget and the “threat” these pose to the industry as a whole. A number of professional associations representing different sectors of the targeted industry, as well as more than 50,000 people, issued a joint press release saying that while they plan to answer the call of Ms. Hélène David, Minister of Culture and Communications, to submit briefs before a parliamentary commission on Quebec's tax systems in September, they deemed it necessary to act in the interim and "inform the government… Continue Reading

BBM Canada rebrands as Numeris

TORONTO – Broadcast audience measurement company BBM has changed its name to Numeris in an effort to reinforce its position as the most respected industry source for audience and consumer behaviour intelligence, the company said Thursday. Numeris said that the brand identity elements, including the name, logo, tagline and colours, capture the authority, transparency, accuracy and relevancy of the information and services the organization provides.  The logo's dominant "N" formed by coloured dots suggests the bringing together of multiple data points as well as representing the many individuals who are instrumental in making significant business decisions that impact the future of Canadian… Continue Reading

Fix roaming and we’ll be your fourth national player, Quebecor CEO tells government

TORONTO – There were no federal politicians that we could see in the audience at the Canadian Telecom Summit on Wednesday and just a handful from the CRTC and Industry Canada, but the message sent by new Quebecor CEO Pierre Dion was certainly meant for the ears of those in charge in Ottawa: If the CRTC moves to dramatically lower the roaming rates the Big Three extract from smaller wireless newcomers to roam on their networks in Canada – and if Industry Canada can fix the tower sharing problems with better rules, Vidéotron will be that fourth national wireless company… Continue Reading

CANADIAN TELECOM SUMMIT 2014: A few sound bites from Shaw COO Jay Mehr

TORONTO – We don’t remember Shaw Communications COO Jay Mehr speaking before the telecom industry in such a forum before, so rather than try to weave a narrative from his 30-minute fireside chat with CTS organizer Mark Goldberg Tuesday afternoon, we thought we’d pick out a few bullet points from his Toronto talk. On handling change in the media and network space “It seems kind of counter-intuitive in a world of rapid-fire change, that our focus is on orderly, managed change – and I know (CEO) Brad (Shaw) has been clear to our company that he doesn’t want to defend our… Continue Reading

CANADIAN TELECOM SUMMIT 2014: Device experts try to cut through noise surrounding M2M market

TORONTO – Near Field Communication (NFC). Machine to Machine (M2M). Internet of Things (IoT). Different phrases, different acronyms, same concept – wireless device-to-device connectivity that enables contactless communications, most notably today for mobile commerce. With so many different definitions buzzing around, “it’s very noisy and it’s very confusing,” said Manoj Jain, communications and media sector leader for Microsoft Canada, who appeared along with other wireless device experts on a panel called “Rage of the Machine” at the Canadian Telecom Summit on Wednesday morning. Jain said Microsoft uses the phrase “Internet of your things” to explain the concept to its customers. “And… Continue Reading

CANADIAN TELECOM SUMMIT 2014: Canada’s digital strategy hinges on tech adoption and education

TORONTO – It quickly became clear during Wednesday morning’s panel discussion at the Canadian Telecom Summit that no one-size-fits-all solution exists when it comes to implementing a national digital strategy that positions Canada as a key player in the global digital marketplace. The arguments for the digitization of Canada’s economy are wide-ranging, said moderator Namir Anani, president and CEO of the Information and Communications Technology Council. “Some would argue that we need investments – without investment we can’t have technology. Others would say it’s our policies – if we don’t have the right trade policy, if we don’t have the… Continue Reading

CANADIAN TELECOM SUMMIT 2014: Tony Lacavera needs money, spectrum, plans unlimited Canadian roaming soon

TORONTO – Wind Mobile Canada has never been so candid, or detailed, about its numbers. During his luncheon keynote Tuesday, Wind CEO Tony Lacavera released subscriber, ARPU and various other metrics that make Wind, now with about 740,000 Canadian customers, look like a growing, viable, business – despite the hundreds of millions in debt owed from 2008 spectrum purchases and its network build since then. But there’s a method to that data dump. Wind needs investors. With its foreign backer Vimpelcom having written Wind Canada’s value down to zero, that gave license to pundits, analysts and competitors… Continue Reading

New copyright laws to come into force in January

OTTAWA – The federal government has taken the final step to implement the Copyright Modernization Act after formalizing the voluntary Notice and Notice regime Tuesday. The Notice and Notice regime formalizes a voluntary system that some copyright owners and Internet service providers (ISPs) have already been participating in for many years.  Set to take effect January 2015, it will legally require Internet intermediaries, such as ISPs and website hosts, to take action upon receiving a notice of alleged infringement from a copyright owner. Specifically, ISPs and hosts are required to forward notices, sent by copyright owners, to users whose Internet address… Continue Reading
