TORONTO – More than CAD $119 million has been pledged so far in connection with Friday’s Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) fundraising telecast in Canada and the U.S., organizers said Sunday.

TORONTO – U.S. private equity firm Quadrangle and Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises (DAVE) have filed a $1.2 billion lawsuit against Industry Canada over their respective investments in new wireless entrant Mobilicity.
In a statement of claim filed Thursday, Quadrangle accuses Industry Canada of negligence, negligent and/or reckless misrepresentation, breach of contract, intentional interference with economic relations, abuse of public office, unjust enrichment and loss of reputation and goodwill.
In brief, Quadrangle argues that Industry Canada is liable because it offered to establish and enforce rules to support a new entrant in Canada’s wireless market, promises that it later “ignored”.

TORONTO – Bell Media and Corus Entertainment have inked a multi-year, multi-platform deal with HBO for the exclusive Canadian rights to the entire past-season library of every HBO scripted series currently on air. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – The federal government said that it will force the communication industry to abandon paper bill charges after the country’s biggest companies failed to commit to doing so at Thursday’s CRTC review into the practice.
Industry Minister James Moore said Friday that charging extra fees to customers who receive paper copies of their bills, a practice known as pay-to-pay billing, was “unfair”, and promised that the government would introduce legislation to end it in the telecommunications sector. He did not say when such legislation would be tabled.
