A curious omission, though
OTTAWA – Just before the federal government shuts down for the holidays, Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly and Innovation Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains co-signed a mandate letter for the committee about to begin the process of reviewing the Copyright Act.
“While often underappreciated, the Copyright Act impacts Canadians every day, shaping what we see and hear, and enhancing our systems for the creation and use of content,” wrote the minsters to the chairman of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, which will lead the statutory review in the new year.
The letter asks the…

But this still isn’t the end of it. Bell appeal to Commission awaits a decision
OTTAWA – The Federal Court of Appeal ruled today that the CRTC does, in fact, have the jurisdiction to make new rules for an individual program, despite the “irony” of deploying rules which are normally used to protect and promote Canadian content to instead promote the airing of American advertising.
As readers may recall, in January of 2015 the Commission made a decision stemming from its Let’s Talk TV policy review process that revoked the Canadian broadcast rightsholder’s ability to simultaneously substitute its signal over the…

EDMONTON – Telus hit wireless speeds faster than 2 Gbps during recent tests in Edmonton, the company announced Friday.
Telus said that the tests used 3.5 GHz spectrum, demonstrating how important this spectrum is to enabling 5G networks of the future. 3.5 GHz spectrum provides increased capability to cover wide urban and suburban areas as well as inside buildings to deliver true 5G speeds, and Telus said that its tests prove that speeds up to three times faster than current LTE networks are not only achievable, but will become mainstream over the next three years.
"For Canada to remain a leader in…

OTTAWA – Consumers with less to spend on their telecom bundles combined with the uncertainty created by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) renegotiations will slow growth in Canada’s telecommunication industry, says The Conference Board of Canada.
Despite a jump in online services over the past decade, output in the telecommunications industry has actually contracted by 1.5% since 2012, the think tank said a new report. Industry revenues have performed better, but the gains have been due mostly to higher prices and changes to the mix of consumers' telecommunications bundles, which have led to improving margins. However, rising Canadian…

Oh, and is it time for Bell Media and Corus to merge?
NETFLIX IS THE NUMBER one TV channel in Canada. Quibble with old definitions of an OTT and TV network if you like, but our big, linear networks are nowhere near as big anymore in the face of the global juggernaut that is Netflix. It’s been that way since last fall, and it’s not even close.
Who says this? Our largest pure-play media company: Corus Entertainment. In its December 1st submission to CRTC on the federal government’s call for comments on future distribution models, the company states on page three:…

MONTREAL — “I’ve gotten such great press lately,” Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly joked to break the ice in a speech Friday to Montreal’s board of trade. But despite mounting pressure, especially in Quebec, to impose sales taxes on foreign over-the-top services like Netflix, Joly had no new announcements to make, sticking to repeating the promises made in the Creative Canada plan released in September.
“I hear you,” she told the crowd present, including board president Michel Leblanc, who said during his introduction that he expected Joly to explain the government’s position on this issue. She repeated several times that she’s…
