If approved, Mediadenovo would become a new programming undertaking that would sell the two minutes per hour of local availability ad time to national advertisers, and in turn, direct the majority of the revenues to Canadian programming. In a move designed to further demonstrate its public policy credentials, the… Continue Reading

Hearing and visually imapired consumers must be considered too, CRTC told

OTTAWA – Mediac Inc. is urging the CRTC not to “abandon” hearing- and visually-challenged consumers. “With revenues shifting to multi-platform content distribution, the CRTC bears a duty to ensure that all Canadians’ ability to access the communications system is improved and strengthened, not reduced,” said Mediac president and CEO Beverley Milligan, in a statement. “As one of the central issues for hearing- or visually-challenged people with disabilities, and for those learning Canada’s official languages, accessibility will become meaningless unless the CRTC’s report to the government considers the benefits of encouraging and ensuring accessible content going forward.” The company, which specializes in measuring… Continue Reading

Quebecor complaint against Bell TV over signal theft dismissed by CRTC

OTTAWA – The CRTC has dismissed a complaint made against Bell TV by Quebecor Media Inc. over the way the DTH provider is combatting signal theft. In a complaint dated March 23, 2009, Quebecor said that Bell TV had recently introduced a new sales method that would allow someone to equip themselves with one or several Bell TV receivers and to employ various methods of signal theft without Bell TV being able to track them.  This practice of retailing ‘grab-and-go’ receivers calls into question the commitments Bell TV made in 2003 when it pledged to implement specific measures to combat signal theft,… Continue Reading

CRTC should make distributors pay for local TV, says CEP

OTTAWA – According to the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union (CEP), the CRTC should “force” cable and satellite companies to pay for the local TV stations they use. Canada’s largest media union, scheduled to appear at the Commission’s hearing Tuesday afternoon, said that it’s up to the CRTC to “re-balance” revenues in the broadcasting system by having BDUS pay for the local TV stations they carry, just as they already pay for foreign signals. "Canadians are already over taxed by cable companies drunk on profits so high that oil companies must be envious," said Peter Murdoch, VP of media, in a… Continue Reading

In its decision, the… Continue Reading
