CRTC denies CAB request for pandemic-related regulatory relief

Offers extended payment deadlines instead OTTAWA – After holding a public consultation, the CRTC yesterday denied the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ (CAB) request for Covid-related regulatory relief for private broadcasters. In July 2020, the CAB, which represents the majority of private Canadian programming services, sought “immediate regulatory relief relating to expenditure and exhibition requirements for Canadian private broadcasters due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the CRTC’s decision. Canada needs more competition (including in telecom), says Bureau

OTTAWA – Noting even “prior to the pandemic, there was already mounting concern that a rise of market power was contributing to sluggish growth, stagnant wages and deeper economic inequality in advanced economies, including Canada,” the Competition Bureau released a report on the outcome of its June 2021 Competition and Growth Summit, which suggests Canada’s telecommunication sector needs more competition.

CRTC says no to participation funding proceeding

By Denis Carmel OTTAWA – The CRTC last week denied a request made in April by the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) and the Forum for Research and Policy in Communications (FRPC) for a proceeding to be initiated to examine the Broadcasting Participation Fund’s (BPF) funding situation. The BPF was set up to fund consumer and public interest groups, such as PIAC and FRPC, for their participation in broadcasting proceedings. The financing provided comes from portions of tangible benefits paid through broadcasting transactions since 2012. CBC licencing decision put off until March by CRTC

OTTAWA – The CRTC announced today in Broadcasting Decision CRTC 2021-266 it has administratively renewed the CBC’s broadcasting licences from September 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, and extended the distribution orders for CBC News Network, ICI RDI and ICI ARTV until March 31, 2022. The Corporation’s licences were previously administratively renewed from September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021, and the distribution orders for CBC News Network, ICI RDI and ICI ARTV were previously extended until August 31, 2021. Bell delivers “outstanding” Q2 performance

MySignal.ca in violation of CRTC order to join CCTS

OTTAWA — The Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS) announced today telecom services provider MySignal.ca Solutions Inc. is in violation of a mandatory CRTC order to join the CCTS and participate in its complaints-handling process. MySignal.ca provides Internet, phone and TV services in Canada, and must participate in the CCTS as a regulatory requirement. After receiving a customer complaint about MySignal.ca in March 2018, the CCTS notified the company of its regulatory obligation to join the organization. 3500 MHz spectrum auction raises $8.9B (updated)

OTTAWA – Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada announced today the provisional results of the 3500 MHz auction, which earned a total of $8.91 billion. The auction began in June and concluded July 23. Winning bidders have until August 13 to submit 20% of their final payment and until October 4 to submit the remaining 80%. The money will be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund administered by the Receiver General of Canada, according to an ISED press release.
