OTTAWA – Members of the Canadian Media Guild (CMG) voted overwhelmingly in favour of a new five-year collective agreement with CBC/Radio-Canada, it was announced today.
Ninety-three percent of members approved the deal reached four months ahead of the expiry of the existing agreement.
"The new agreement is based on the principle that people are the foundation of everything that CBC/Radio-Canada does," said Hubert Lacroix, president and CEO, in a press release. "We’re working together to strengthen our ability to deliver as the national public broadcaster."

OAKVILLE, Ont. – Among Canadian TV web brands, The Weather Network sets the pace.
The company set a new record for unique viewers in December as 6.86 million Canadians visited the cable channel’s web site, a 48% increase over the previous month. (A lot of December snow in the Greater Toronto Area and difficult storms in Vancouver probably helped too…)

OTTAWA – CBC/Radio-Canada is embarking on a new study it says will “evaluate the breadth and depth of its news content.”
The study, announced yesterday, “will also gauge Canadians’ expectations of the public broadcaster’s news services.” The independent study will be done by a third party and the results will be made public, promised the press release.

TORONTO – CBC Newsworld has launched an HD channel for Rogers digital cable customers in Ontario and New Brunswick.
Calling itself “the first Canadian news channel to offer HD free to their viewers”, the news channel will include its coverage of the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Barrack Obama on Rogers’ on demand platform free for two weeks, beginning January 21 at 5 pm ET.

TORONTO – The CBC says that ratings are up for their local and national newscasts.
Its Toronto television supper hour news was the only local news show to gain audience in the Greater Toronto Area for the period from October 6 to December 14, 2008, according to the press release. OTTAWA – CBC/Radio-Canada has asked the CRTC to review regulations that apply to direct-to-home satellite BDUs “to ensure that official-language minority communities have access to the public broadcaster’s full program offering”.
The CRTC began hearings earlier this week to look at broadcasting services in English and French linguistic minority communities across Canada.
CBC/Radio-Canada filed a brief with the CRTC in November detailing “the concerns” of official-language minority communities, and proposing “enhanced distribution” of CBC/Radio-Canada programming to the areas in which they reside.

OTTAWA – The CRTC has agreed to delay proceedings on a proposed regulatory framework for video-on-demand (VOD) undertakings and advertising in local availabilities, but only by a month.
As reported by Cartt.ca, the CBC and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) asked the Commission to delay proceedings on these issues for at least a year due to deadlines with other CRTC proceedings, and in light of the current tough economy.

TORONTO – ACTRA members have voted to accept the terms of the CBC television and radio agreement, and the local and regional addendum to the national commercial agreement.
Each agreement received the support of more than 98% of eligible voting members, according to the press release.

OTTAWA – The CBC has asked the CRTC to delay proceedings on a proposed regulatory framework for video-on-demand (VOD) undertakings.
The Commission issued a call for comments in October, seeking to clarify the expected role and contributions of VOD services to the Canadian broadcasting system. Comments were to be due by January 29, 2009.
