COMMENTARY: New numbers, little response. The digital TV transition remains stuck in neutral

There are 407 days left until the end of analog over-the-air television in the major markets the CRTC has identified as must-switches (just look up and to the right to see our countdown clock). CBC ropes Calgary Stampede for another 5 years

CALGARY – CBC has renewed its broadcast agreement with the Calgary Stampede for another five years, with an option for additional coverage in 2016 and 2017. Friesen takes on lead anchor duties at Global TV

TORONTO – Another accomplished female journalist is stepping into a lead anchor chair in Canada. Global Television named Emmy Award-winning journalist Dawna Friesen as anchor and executive editor of its national evening newscast Global National at a press conference in Toronto on Tuesday. TV renewal hearings will start in Spring

OTTAWA – The CRTC has released an approximate schedule for its upcoming television license renewals. First up will be the renewal of Vide-on-Demand undertakings which will be handled via paper processes this Fall.  This will be followed by private English-language groups CTV, CanWest, Rogers, Corus, and CJBN-TV Kenora in the Spring of 2011. Private French-language groups services Quebecor, V interactions, Astral, TV5 Quebec Canada, and Canal Evasion will be considered in early Fall 2011, while all other conventional, specialty, pay, PPV, and community television undertakings whose licences expire in the next two years will be scheduled for Spring 2012. CBC’s World Cup audiences continue to climb

TORONTO – As the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa winds down, CBC continues to rack up some impressive viewer numbers for its on-line and TV coverage. Wednesday’s semi final match between Spain and Germany attracted the highest viewer numbers of the tournament so far, as an average audience of 2.484 million tuned in to CBC television, and 353,957 total live streaming views were recorded.  The opening semi final game between Uruguay and the Netherlands earlier in the week attracted an average TV audience of 2.024 million viewers, while on-line the game recorded 268,423 total live streams. Former CTV CEO Murray Chercover dead at 80

TORONTO – Canadian broadcast pioneer Murray Chercover, the man who oversaw the launch of such stalwart shows as Canada AM and W5 (and is said to be the one who lured Lloyd Robertson from CBC to CTV), died Saturday due to complications from pneumonia. The former president and CEO of the network was 80. CTV put together an excellent report on Chercover and his career here and the Canadian Communications Foundation has a full background (including the photo at right) of his multi-faceted, varied career here.

Elphick joins Vancouver’s Joytv 10

VANCOUVER – Douglas Elphick is joining Joytv 10 (CHNU-TV) in Vancouver as its general sales manager, effective July 12. With more than 30 years of broadcasting industry experience, Elphick will be responsible for overseeing local and regional advertising sales for Joytv 10, the conventional over-the-air station owned by S-VOX serving the Vancouver, Victoria and Fraser Valley regions of B.C. Elphick most recently worked with the CTV Olympic Broadcast Consortium on efforts to generate regional advertising sales. Rogers to launch new discount wireless brand this fall, say reports

TORONTO – Rogers Communications is preparing for the launch of another new wireless brand this fall, say several reports. The story was originally broken by the Boy Genius Report late last week and cbcnews.ca added a story here. Others have since done reports, too. The new brand is said to be aimed at wireless newcomers such as Wind, Mobilicity, Public Mobile and Videotron and will add an additional option for consumers in the low-cost segment of the market. Too much U.S. programming on CBC, says Friends

VANCOUVER – Prime time Canadian content on CBC English TV stands at a 30-year low, according to an annual survey conducted by Friends of Canadian Broadcasting. The survey ‘What’s ON TV 2010’ examines the prime time schedules of conventional TV stations broadcasting in major Canadian markets during the spring sweep period, (mid-February to mid-March), when AC Nielsen is measuring audiences. Canadians go on-demand, on-line for World Cup, says Rogers

TORONTO – Canadians audiences can’t get enough of the extensive coverage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it seems.
