TORONTO – Bell Media and CBC/Radio-Canada confirmed Friday that they will form a broadcast partnership to bid for the Canadian media rights for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
The announcement comes one day after Rogers Media said that it would not take part in bidding for those rights, citing scheduling conflicts and other financial priorities. Rogers Media and Bell Media will continue to partner on the broadcast of the London 2012 Olympic Games next summer.

TORONTO – Rogers Media said Thursday that it will not take part in any bidding for the Canadian broadcast rights to the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games as it is pulling out of Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.
The decision will not affect the company’s plans to help show more than 5,000 hours of coverage of London 2012, in conjunction with CTV. Under the current consortium agreement, which spans the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games and 2012 London Summer Games, Rogers Media is a 20% stakeholder of the consortium while the remaining 80% interest is controlled by CTV.

TORONTO – CBC has launched an on-line entertainment destination called CBC Live in order to connect Canadians with high-profile personalities and happenings.
The entertainment portal debuts Wednesday night for the 26th Annual Gemini Awards where the live stream will feature digital host Tom Green in the ‘Tom Green Room’ beginning at 7 pm ET. It will also be available as the on-line companion for the television broadcast which begins at 8 pm (8:30 NT).

TORONTO – Veteran Canadian news journalists Tom Clark and Patrick Brown have joined Global News.
Clark, who left CTV almost a year ago, will host Global’s new political program The West Block. Legendary foreign correspondent Brown, most recently with CBC, will be the Global News China correspondent, based in Beijing.

TORONTO – As the country readies for the start of another hockey season, Canada’s sports broadcasters have announced their NHL schedules.
CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada announced an 109-game schedule starting with preseason play on September 24th, and regular season play on October 6, 2011, the NHL’s opening day of the 2011-12 season.
Its schedule also includes the 59th NHL All-Star Game on January 28 and 29 from Ottawa; Hockey Day in Canada from Prince Edward Island on February 11; and the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs and final.

A MONTH FROM TODAY, Canadian Cable Systems Alliance members, their supporters and suppliers will gather at the Fairmont Tremblant in Mont Tremblant Quebec for Connect 2011, its yearly conference and annual general meeting.

OTTAWA-GATINEAU – The CBC has received permission from the CRTC to continue broadcasting its analog over-the-air television signals in 22 markets for another full year.
The Commission said Tuesday that the national broadcaster now has until August 31, 2012 to “find solutions” for viewers who may lose access to its over-the-air signals after the transition to digital television.
The CBC operates 25 local stations in mandatory markets whose over-the-air transmitters will be converted to digital in time to meet this year’s August 31st deadline. It also operates 22 analog transmitters that rebroadcast its stations’ signals into other communities that are also considered…
