New iPhone available in Canada

TORONTO – The new Apple iPhone 3G S went on sale in eight countries over the weekend, including here at home to Rogers wireless and Fido customers.

Unveiled earlier this month at Apple’s annual software developers conference, the new iPhone is two times faster than its predecessor, and comes with a built-in video camera, a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, and a voice control feature which lets customers use their own voice to call a contact, dial a number, or play a song.

Rogers is selling the device on-line and in-store starting at $199 for the 16 GB version and $299 for the 32 GB model. Both are available in black or white.

The company said it is offering “a variety of pricing alternatives and limited time promotions”, including a $30 for 6 GB monthly data plan for all iPhone customers; the option to purchase the device for “Rogers’ cost” on its website; an early hardware upgrade which promises to save customers up to 71%; and a ‘Fido Rewards’ promotion that allows Fido iPhone customers to redeem FidoDollars towards their upgrade with an additional 100 FidoDollars.

Existing iPhone customers can upgrade their software for free, and Rogers is offering standard rate plan pricing for the existing iPhone 3G customers starting at $99 (GB) and $149 (16 GB).

“Last year, Rogers was thrilled to be the first and only carrier to bring the Apple iPhone 3G to Canada,” said Rogers Wireless SVP and CMO John Boynton, in a statement. “Almost one year later, we are again excited to be partnering with Apple to bring the world’s fastest iPhone to Canadians – the iPhone 3G S. And, with download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps, Rogers’ 3.5 HSPA network is now three times faster than the competition, which means that Rogers Wireless and Fido customers are able to enjoy all the new capabilities built into the iPhone 3G S on Canada’s fastest mobile network."
