Joly to announce new CBC CEO?

OTTAWA – At 9:15 Tuesday morning, Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly will “make an important announcement about the future leadership of CBC/Radio-Canada.”

As readers will be aware, current president and CEO Hubert Lacroix’s contract expired at the end of 2017. However, he agreed to stay on as the federal government dithered on his replacement – saying in January that it wanted more time to look at candidates living abroad to replace Lacroix.

After doing interviews, the feds did have a short list of qualified candidates in the fall of 2017 (we heard some names which we won’t repeat here), but delayed on making a decision.

Curiously, the release does not actually say Joly will be announcing a new CEO, just that her announcement will be important and that it regards the future leadership of the CBC.

Does that mean it’s a release saying something simple with too many words, or does Minister Joly have something different in mind with the future leadership of the public broadcaster? Perhaps she has more to say about the CBC's board of directors, which just added five new members in December.

We’ll find out at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
