TORONTO – Matt Galloway, currently the host of the top-rated morning radio show in Toronto, CBC’s Metro Morning, will become the new host of the CBC Radio’s The Current in the new year, the broadcaster announced today.

Galloway’s last broadcast of Metro Morning will be December 6th and he will officially join The Current on Monday, January 6, 2020. Guest-host Laura Lynch, will continue to anchor The Current in the interim.

Galloway joined Metro Morning as host in March 2010, succeeding long-time anchor Andy Barrie and takes over The Current after the departure of Anna Maria Tremonti in June 2019 (whom we featured here).

"Audiences across the country are about to discover what Toronto listeners have long appreciated," said Susan Marjetti, executive director of CBC Radio and Audio, in the pubcaster’s press release. “Matt has done an outstanding job on Metro Morning. And while it is hard to think of a Metro Morning without Matt, it is also important that our brightest and best get new opportunities.

“Curious and smart he asks the questions that need asking. And like his incredible predecessor, Anna Maria Tremonti, he is a great listener and that allows him to deepen the conversation,” she added.

The CBC will now search for a new Metro Morning host.

“I’ve been getting out of bed at three o’clock in the morning to hop on my bike and greet Toronto listeners on the airwaves for the last decade,” said Galloway. “I’m looking forward to being part of the big stories in Canada today, and diving into the international topics that I’m always curious about.”

The award-winning Galloway has been with CBC Radio for more than 15 years. In addition to hosting Metro Morning, he has anchored CBC Radio's coverage of the Olympic Games on several occasions, including Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
