
OTTAWA — Former CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein was appointed last week to the Order of Canada, announced the Governor General of Canada.
He was recognized for “his distinguished and multifaceted career in law and federal public service,” which includes being the chair of the CRTC from 2007 to 2012.
He is listed on his LinkedIn page as an arbitrator for mediation firm JAMS.
A lawyer by training, von Finckenstein was a judge on the Federal Court from 2003 to 2007, commissioner of competition from 1997 to 2003, and before that assistant deputy attorney general in the Justice Department, assistant deputy minister on free trade policy in the Foreign Affairs department, chief counsel at the Trade Negotiation Office, and General Counsel for what’s now called Innovation Canada.
He is also a regular media contributor, including to Cartt.ca on matters related to the legal aspects of pending legislation C-11 and C-18.
He is a graduate of Carleton University and Queen’s University.
The Governor General appointed nearly 100 appointees to the high honour, which is made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada. Last week’s announcement also included promotions within the order. John Bragg, founder of cable company Eastlink parent Bragg Communications, was promoted to companion.
Other order appointments include broadcaster Colleen Jones; former CBC Radio host and military heritage author Ted Barris; Franco-Manitoban journalist Bernard Bocquel; La Presse reporter Michèle Ouimet; former Radio-Canada foreign correspondent Raymond Saint-Pierre; former CBC producer and past executive director of The Walrus Shelley Ambrose; Prospero Pictures founder Martin Katz; Quebec producer, director and columnist Stéphane Laporte; Canadian media and communications scholar André Caron; and University of Alberta law professor, author and media personality Tim Caulfield.
NHL’er Sidney Crosby, music producer Bob Ezrin, Parachute Club front woman Lorraine Segato and former pro soccer goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc, are among the other notable inductees.
Appointees will be invited to an investiture ceremony at a later date to receive their insignia.
