STOCKHOLM and BARCELONA – Ericsson showed off a new IPTV remote at the Mobile World Congress earlier this week which it claims will re-define the TV viewing experience.
Available to consumers only through their IPTV service provider, the device is a single interface for controlling Internet video, live and on-demand television, the PC and the mobile phone in the connected home.
It also can function as a portable TV in a WiFi-enabled home, or provide a second screen for previewing content, exploring program guides, or just browsing the web without a "distracting" window on the TV screen.
"The Ericsson IPTV Remote re-defines the category and puts even greater control in the hands of our customers’ subscribers”, said Jan Wäreby, Ericsson’s head of business unit multimedia, in the announcement. “Initially, we will focus on TV services but going forward it will be possible to add applications such as enhanced video communications, remote healthcare and home surveillance."
