CTV, ‘A’ Channels win Murrow awards


TORONTO – CTV National plus a number of its local news stations received an Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio-Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) this week.

CTV stations received more than half of the international awards, more than any other Canadian broadcaster competing in this category, the company said in a press release on Thursday.

“It is extremely gratifying to be recognized by the RTDNA for the hard work and dedication of CTV News teams that serve communities across Canada,” said Robert Hurst, president of CTV News, in the release. “We are driven by a commitment to deliver the highest quality news that viewers want, and are delighted that our national and regional news teams have garnered this acknowledgement.”

CTV National News received the award for its coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch arrival in Canada, while CTV Southwestern Ontario was recognized with two awards in the Small Television Market Category.

The other large market CTV winners were:

– CTV Toronto – Overall Excellence: “CTV News Toronto”
– CTV Edmonton – Video Breaking News Coverage: “WCB Hostage Taking”
– CTV Calgary – Video Continuing Coverage: “H1N1”
– CP24 – Use of Video: “LeDrew Live – Tornado Strikes Toronto”.

CTV’s /A\ Channels also took five of eight possible awards in the small market television category as follows:

– /A\ Vancouver Island – Video Reporting: Hard News: “Captain Cook”
– /A\ Vancouver Island – Video Newscast: “/A\ News At 5”
– /A\ Vancouver Island – Video Sports Reporting: “FIFA Flaws”
– /A\ London/Windsor – Video Continuing Coverage: “Tori Stafford”
– /A\ Barrie – Overall Excellence: “/A\ News Barrie”
